《戰(zhàn)馬》講述了一個男孩與一匹馬之間非同尋常的友誼，他們被分離的命運因為第一次世界大戰(zhàn)又重新交織在一起。

1914年，在德文郡小鎮(zhèn)，男孩艾爾伯特目睹了幼駒喬伊的誕生。在集市上，它被頻繁叫價，最終被艾爾伯特的父親泰德用30基尼的天價收入囊中，跛腳的他也因此得罪了地主。地主登門拜訪，稱如果喬伊不能犁地將立刻將其帶走。于是，艾爾伯特在逼迫之下，為喬伊套上了鞍蹬，強迫它犁地，甚至還使用了皮鞭，最終靈性的喬伊真的領(lǐng)會了艾爾伯特的苦衷并將一片遍地石塊的荒地翻耕了出來，第一次表現(xiàn)出出人意料的潛力。
