英語中多數(shù)口語習(xí)語的功能都是單一的，例如How are you？How do you do？表示問候，Goodbye用于道別。但有些習(xí)語是多功能的，例如I？蒺m sorry.可以表示①說錯話或做錯事向?qū)Ψ奖硎尽皩Σ黄稹?；②委婉表達不同意或為自己開脫的借口。下面就介紹一些這類多功能口語習(xí)語供學(xué)習(xí)參考。

①當(dāng)然

Of course Peter is coming. He always comes to our parties.

②當(dāng)說話人知道別人已知他正說的內(nèi)容；有時用于強調(diào)自己的觀點之前，“正如所期待的那樣”，“我所說的是真的”。

The concert was good， of course， but it wasn？蒺t worth the ticket price！

The weather is bad again， so the buses are late， of course.

2？郾go on

①用于不相信某人所說的話：“我可不信”，“別夸張”。

4？郾as a matter of fact

①用于引出會使說話者意想不到或很吃驚的回答。

—I hear Mr Hilton is leaving. I wonder who will get（接替）his job？

—I am， as a matter of fact.

②用于強調(diào)所說的話，使之更肯定或更具體。

I didn？蒺t go to the club on Saturday. As a matter of fact， I？蒺ve not been there for months.

相同的表達還有：for that matter， in fact， in actual fact， in point of fact， the fact of the matter is。例如：This book will fascinate（使著迷）all students of the English language， and for that matter， all speakers of English， too.

又如：I？蒺ve not read the book， and the fact is neither has anyone else.

③事實上，真的。

—Was the play good？

—Yes， as a matter of fact， it was fantastic（令人著迷）.

①意為“當(dāng)然”（美國用法=certainly或of course）。
