      On Strategies of Improving Junior High School Students

      【Abstract】With the increasingly frequent international exchanges,English,as an international language,has been attached greater importance.The oral English ability of junior high school students plays an indispensable role in their everyday study and social interaction,and it is the present junior school study that can lay a solid foundation for their future study and life.Therefore,to comprehensively improve their oral English ability is in urgent need and of paramount significance.This paper focuses on analyzing the external and internal factors influencing the cultivation of junior high school students oral English ability,and put forwards the corresponding cultivating strategies of the oral English ability of junior high school students.

      I.The Factors Influencing the Oral English Ability of Junior High School Students

      A great variety of external and internal factors can exert influence on the oral English ability of junior high school students.

      For one thing,there are lots of external factors that can affect their oral English ability.For instance,they tend to spend little time practicing oral English.In their everyday learning,students have few or even no opportunity to get acquainted with foreigners or interact with classmates in English.At home,there is no atmosphere of practicing English with parents,most of whom cannot speak English at all.However,the limited English classes are far from sufficient for them to be equipped with the ability to communicate in English.

      For another,aside from external factors,some internal factors such as mentality can also powerfully impact their oral English ability.It is their inappropriate mentality that contributes to their low level of oral English.First of all,the mentality of following suit may prompt them to take a wait-and-see attitude and become reluctant to speak English.Some of students hold that those who speak English are “showing off”,and as time goes on,a bad mood of being reluctant to speak English gradually forms.Secondly,the mentality of inferiority often exists in those students who have low receptive ability or experience failures when they try to speak English for the first time.Other students fluent pronunciation and complete reply make them feel inferior to others.Therefore,they lose courage in speaking English and become silent during the class in the long run.

      II.Strategies of Cultivating the Oral English Ability of Junior High School Students

      In accordance with the factors influencing junior high school students oral English ability,the author brings forward the following corresponding cultivating strategies:

      To begin with,in an effort to cultivate the oral English ability of junior high school students,teachers can create favorable atmosphere for students to practice their Oral English.For instance,teachers can regard the class as a stage where short plays adapted from texts with vivid stories and plots can be performed by students under the guidance of teachers.In this way,more students will be actively involved in these Oral English activities,thus increasing their time of practicing oral English.

      Secondly,the improvement of junior high school students oral English ability is a comprehensive process that involves a great variety of aspects,including teaching methods and equipment,etc.That is to say,we should combine the daily training with the modern teaching methods that have been increasingly introduced to classrooms.The modern teaching equipment has created flexible and diversified teaching methods and vivid and active class atmosphere,rendering the class teaching to be more directly perceived and vivid and more conducive to oral English teaching.Conditions permitting,teachers should make the best of computers,teaching software and multimedia technology of words,sounds and images to vividly display the content in textbooks to students.

      Conclusion

      The cultivation and improvement of junior high school students oral English ability is a long-term process that is in need of close cooperation between teachers and students.Based on the collected data and materials related to the current situation of oral English learning among junior high school students,this paper analyzes the external and internal factors influencing the cultivation of their oral English ability,and put forwards the cultivating strategies of the oral English ability of junior high school students.Despite the fact that teaching methods and strategies may vary from person to person,we are confirmed that improving the oral English ability of junior high school students is the common aspiration of both teachers and students.
