1. Im fourteen and often go to the grocery1 store to sell eggs with Mum.

2. Then we look at the shotgun and leather shoes in the shop window, but do not have enough money.
然后我和媽媽會(huì)看看櫥窗里的獵槍和皮鞋,可是我們沒(méi)有錢買。
3. During the summer holiday, Mr. Hook hires me to dig a well. There are lots of blisters2 on my palms3, but I dont care.
暑假,霍克先生雇我?guī)退蚓?。盡管雙手磨起了泡,可我不覺(jué)得苦。
4. The well is finished. Mr. Hook pays me and I run to the grocery store for the gun. 井打好了,霍克先生付給我工錢。我跑到雜貨店,去買那支獵槍。
5. But when I see the leather4 shoes, I am not happy at all.
但當(dāng)我看到媽媽試穿過(guò)的那雙皮鞋,高興勁兒全沒(méi)有了。
6. I get home and hide the gun in the haystack5. I want to show it when Mum buys the shoes.
回到家,我把獵槍藏到干草堆里,想等媽媽買了皮鞋再拿出來(lái)。
7. Mum asks me to have her shoes mended. The shoemaker has a look and says they are too worn to mend.
媽媽讓我替她去補(bǔ)鞋。鞋匠接過(guò)鞋看了看說(shuō),這鞋破得沒(méi)法再補(bǔ)了。
8. I run back home and then go to the grocery store with the gun. “I want to exchange the gun for the leather shoes.” I say to the boss.
我跑回家拿出獵槍來(lái)到雜貨店。我對(duì)老板說(shuō):“我想用獵槍換那雙皮鞋?!?/p>
9. “Your shoes are too worn to mend,” I say to Mum with the shoes behind my back.
我走進(jìn)家門,把鞋藏在背后對(duì)媽媽說(shuō):“您的那雙鞋太舊已經(jīng)沒(méi)有辦法再補(bǔ)了?!?/p>
10. Mum is very disappointed. I take out the shoes, “I buy the new shoes with my money.”
媽媽很失望。我拿出鞋說(shuō):“我買下了這雙新鞋?!?/p>
11. “But that is your first money.” Her eyes are moist6 with tears.
“可這是你第一次掙到的錢啊!”媽媽的眼睛都濕潤(rùn)了。
12. Now the shoes are worn, but Mum hates to throw them away. I understand it.
現(xiàn)在那雙鞋已經(jīng)破舊了,可媽媽舍不得扔掉它。我知道這是為什么。
