      大衛(wèi),新西蘭籍教師,來(lái)到中國(guó)——這個(gè)在文化上和他家鄉(xiāng)迥異、但在變化歷程上卻與新西蘭相似的古老國(guó)度。他體驗(yàn)了十年“一手”的中國(guó)文化,生活的靈感催生他創(chuàng)作短篇小說(shuō)集《回家》,文中的人物都是有血有肉、有感情有欲望有夢(mèng)想的鮮活個(gè)體。

      第一次見(jiàn)雷大衛(wèi),是去年冬天的一個(gè)中午。他穿著一身看不出顏色的沖鋒衣,背著雙肩包,帶著醒人的寒氣來(lái)到出版社,一頂灰撲撲的鴨舌帽壓不住胡亂翹起的灰色卷發(fā)。

      人們對(duì)外籍口語(yǔ)教師的普遍印象是能言善道,但筆頭功夫卻乏善可陳。大衛(wèi)顯然不是典型——他擅長(zhǎng)寫(xiě)作,顯得羞赧夾著點(diǎn)深沉,說(shuō)話時(shí)候灰藍(lán)色的眼珠習(xí)慣性地斜往上方。而他濃重的新西蘭口音對(duì)于幾年沒(méi)練英語(yǔ)聽(tīng)力的我來(lái)說(shuō),也是個(gè)不小的挑戰(zhàn)。幸而在一陣不尷不尬的比劃和打哈哈后,我們進(jìn)入了有關(guān)他的寫(xiě)作歷程、他的短篇小說(shuō)集《回家》的深度交談。

      大衛(wèi)把自己的故鄉(xiāng)叫作“奧特亞羅瓦”,在毛利語(yǔ)中是“綿綿白云之鄉(xiāng)”的意思。童年時(shí)的大衛(wèi)無(wú)拘無(wú)束,喜愛(ài)在草原和森林里漫游,他說(shuō),這樣的經(jīng)歷帶來(lái)了創(chuàng)造性的寫(xiě)作靈感。多年后,他來(lái)到了中國(guó)——這個(gè)在文化上和他家鄉(xiāng)迥異、但在變化歷程上卻與新西蘭相似的古老國(guó)度。

      “我在中國(guó)待了十年,體驗(yàn)了十年‘一手的中國(guó)文化,我的腦袋像海綿吸水一樣吸收新文化的信息。豐富的生活給我靈感,于是我開(kāi)始寫(xiě)詩(shī),后來(lái)就有了寫(xiě)短篇小說(shuō)的想法。和我的中國(guó)朋友們一樣,我真真切切看見(jiàn)了傳統(tǒng)文化被都市文明滲入,快節(jié)奏代替了慢生活,勞動(dòng)者不得不從鄉(xiāng)下來(lái)到大城市,才能養(yǎng)活自己?!闭f(shuō)起對(duì)中國(guó)的感受,他開(kāi)始滔滔不絕。“中國(guó)正在經(jīng)歷巨變,一些人在時(shí)代浪潮中站起來(lái)了,一些人則依然在掙扎,他們彼此友好,各司其職。我寫(xiě)了四個(gè)簡(jiǎn)單的故事,有關(guān)勇氣和韌性的簡(jiǎn)單故事——一些處于劣勢(shì)的人怎樣在心靈實(shí)現(xiàn)逆襲和得到救贖的故事?!闭f(shuō)完他看著我,仿佛在尋求我的認(rèn)同。我問(wèn)他,你覺(jué)得在中國(guó)之外的外國(guó)人,對(duì)中國(guó)了解嗎。他說(shuō),他們很好奇,有時(shí)他們自以為了解,但其實(shí)不然。

      等大衛(wèi)走后,我開(kāi)始審讀《回家》等四個(gè)故事——《回家》《空中樂(lè)聲》《漫長(zhǎng)的等待》和《承諾》。和他所言一致,在他樸實(shí)到“稚拙”的文字中,站在我面前的是活生生的普通人,有在家?guī)O子的奶奶、遭遇事故后成了流浪藝人的建筑工人、夸下??谝团畠阂黄ヱR的都市打工者,他們的鮮活特質(zhì)沒(méi)有被“刻板身份”所淹沒(méi)。他們有著讓我們身臨其境的境遇,讓我們有感同身受的情感。寫(xiě)了《尋路中國(guó)》的海斯勒曾言:“就我讀到的20世紀(jì)90年代晚期國(guó)外媒體刊載的中國(guó)報(bào)道和故事而言,我都不大喜歡。我覺(jué)得它們對(duì)這個(gè)國(guó)家的理解很膚淺,對(duì)中國(guó)人的描寫(xiě)也非常干癟?!焙K估臻_(kāi)啟了西方人近景式描寫(xiě)當(dāng)代中國(guó)“微不足道”小地方和普通人的新角度,大衛(wèi)很高興繼承了他的衣缽——不是模仿,而是精神相似。他們都摒棄了西方人的優(yōu)越感,那從殖民時(shí)代起對(duì)東方國(guó)家的固有印象——神秘、專(zhuān)制、貧窮,除了上層建筑中的少數(shù)人,大多數(shù)人都面目模糊,沉默盲從。他們是一團(tuán)、一片、一群,而不是一個(gè)個(gè)有獨(dú)特靈魂的生命。

      西方關(guān)于東方的刻板印象在大衛(wèi)的小說(shuō)中被個(gè)體的鮮明輪廓所清除,但還有另一種枷鎖需要打破。而這層枷鎖所禁錮的不是外來(lái)者,正是我們這些局內(nèi)人。在正式成為《回家》的責(zé)任編輯后,我問(wèn)大衛(wèi),為什么要選《回家》中的老奶奶和《漫長(zhǎng)的等待》中的兒子這類(lèi)屬于非主流的人物作為主人公。大衛(wèi)說(shuō):“他們都有非常傳統(tǒng)的身份。他們的角色在中國(guó)被非常清晰地界定了。我想要表明的是,雖然我們熱愛(ài)和尊重家庭成員,但我們依舊有矛盾。如果總是不解決,那么這些矛盾就會(huì)壓倒我們,生出內(nèi)心的魔鬼。”

      《回家》中的奶奶是一個(gè)典型的中國(guó)婆婆,幫工作繁忙的兒子帶孩子,看不慣不顧家的媳婦,融不進(jìn)孫子的世界。而我們普遍認(rèn)為她這樣乏善可陳的生活無(wú)可厚非,仿佛她習(xí)慣孤獨(dú)和沒(méi)有自我,仿佛她生來(lái)就是老太太,從未年輕過(guò),仿佛她的付出不需要感激,都是職責(zé)所在。

      在一段不算長(zhǎng)的篇幅中,我們和一位深居簡(jiǎn)出、一心照顧孫子的老太太一起經(jīng)歷了普通一天中的一段堪稱(chēng)曲折的心路歷程:從逗鄰居家的貓開(kāi)始,到對(duì)兒子工作的擔(dān)憂,閃回到對(duì)兒子溺愛(ài)的后悔,對(duì)兒媳婦市儈的厭惡,以及對(duì)孫子玩電腦游戲的不理解。故事的最后也是高潮,一向“溫順”的奶奶向玩著帶有暴力成分的游戲的孫子大發(fā)雷霆。之后,奶奶講了她在南京大屠殺時(shí)的一段令人震撼的經(jīng)歷。這段蕩氣回腸的往事讓孫子明白了奶奶為何憤怒,因?yàn)樗欢吧钍嵌嗝纯少F,多么脆弱”,也讓他把奶奶從“中國(guó)婆婆”的身份中解脫出來(lái),她“不再是個(gè)膽小的老太太了,而是一位堅(jiān)強(qiáng)的、富有閱歷的、令人尊敬的女性”。破冰之后,奶奶和孫子的心門(mén)都打開(kāi)了,故事也到此結(jié)束。

      第二個(gè)故事《空中樂(lè)聲》塑造了一個(gè)“非典型”的二胡藝人。原本是建筑工人的他,不幸在一次事故中失去一條腿,淪落成街頭乞討者。這樣一個(gè)物質(zhì)條件極度匱乏的人,卻有著十分豐富的精神世界。“每當(dāng)閉上眼睛,他仿佛進(jìn)入了另一個(gè)比現(xiàn)實(shí)世界更美好、更包容的世界。而音樂(lè)一停,睜開(kāi)雙眼,他們眼前出現(xiàn)的是一個(gè)拖著義肢、拉著二胡殘喘于社會(huì)邊緣的人?!彼S身帶著一把母親留給他的二胡?!凹词苟∑綇奈从眠@把二胡演奏過(guò),但二胡總是被擦拭得锃亮。丁平發(fā)過(guò)誓,除非他練就了一流的演奏水平,否則絕不動(dòng)用這把二胡?!蔽覀儊?lái)到了故事開(kāi)始的地方,在鼓浪嶼的小巷子里,獲得關(guān)注的渴望,以及勾起的痛苦回憶,讓他爆發(fā)出空前的演繹水準(zhǔn),在頓悟中,他仿佛聽(tīng)到母親對(duì)他說(shuō),他是個(gè)音樂(lè)家。接著他用那把祖?zhèn)鞯亩葑喑鰟?dòng)人心魄的旋律——“每一次琴弦的顫動(dòng)都是他神經(jīng)的震顫,每一次琴弓的滑動(dòng)都是他自身痛苦的再現(xiàn)?!辈徽撝蟮拿\(yùn)如何,此刻,他在音樂(lè)中獲得了救贖。幸而作者是仁慈的,在他忘我演奏的時(shí)候,一名獨(dú)立音樂(lè)人剛好路過(guò),把他招進(jìn)了樂(lè)團(tuán)。

      這個(gè)故事乍一看顯得過(guò)于天真,在大部分的經(jīng)驗(yàn)之談中,靠二胡賣(mài)藝的流浪漢是不可能有什么藝術(shù)夢(mèng)想的,他們善于假扮悲慘來(lái)博取同情,人們對(duì)賣(mài)藝者沒(méi)什么信任。但回過(guò)頭來(lái)想,子非魚(yú)安知魚(yú)之樂(lè),況且大衛(wèi)給出的心理描寫(xiě)讓人信服,這就讓本故事顯出一種微妙的啟示作用。endprint

      審讀完四個(gè)故事,我甚感欣慰。欣慰于他對(duì)生活的縝密且深入的觀察。大量的心理描寫(xiě),符合人物本身的閱歷與眼界,也十分貼近中國(guó)現(xiàn)實(shí),讓每個(gè)故事在升華前都有深入泥土的根須。就像大衛(wèi)所說(shuō):“我花費(fèi)了十年時(shí)間來(lái)觀察身邊發(fā)生的事情,之后才開(kāi)始動(dòng)筆。這些角色是真實(shí)的,但也有虛構(gòu)的部分。這些虛構(gòu)來(lái)自于生活的別處,也是真實(shí)的,我把它們用在這些角色上,讓他們更加活靈活現(xiàn)。”

      我也欣慰于他對(duì)邊緣化人物的同情與理解。這些人物,由于力量薄弱,在社會(huì)中是沉默的一群,大衛(wèi)用代入式的文筆替他們說(shuō)出心聲——他們的掙扎與希冀,每一個(gè)都是有血有肉、有感情有欲望有夢(mèng)想的人。

      換句話說(shuō),大衛(wèi)的這種身處其中,卻因自己外來(lái)者身份而得以旁觀的“全景式”文字能夠讓我們重新審視自己的文化與社會(huì),發(fā)現(xiàn)自己的盲點(diǎn),解構(gòu)我們自己的“固見(jiàn)”。這就是第二層被打破的枷鎖——中國(guó)人對(duì)自己群體的片面認(rèn)識(shí)。

      值得一提的是,本書(shū)能出版得益于浙江工商大學(xué)杭商院副院長(zhǎng)王蕾老師及其學(xué)生的精心翻譯和她的引薦。提及大衛(wèi),她說(shuō):“大衛(wèi)比較內(nèi)向,喜歡攝影和寫(xiě)作,觀察事物比較細(xì)膩,話語(yǔ)不多?!睂?duì)于故事的素材,她指出,老太太就是大衛(wèi)的鄰居,對(duì)樓道及外面環(huán)境的描寫(xiě)她都很清楚,還有西溪河下等;火車(chē)上、鼓浪嶼等都和旅行有關(guān)。

      而對(duì)于《回家》英漢雙語(yǔ)的最終呈現(xiàn)方式,她有著自己的理解:“我希望更多的外國(guó)人通過(guò)小說(shuō)了解中國(guó),譯文的作用是輔助的,能幫助中國(guó)人了解外國(guó)人的視角?!?/p>

      王蕾老師的翻譯非常走心:“我覺(jué)得譯者要忠實(shí)于作者,在準(zhǔn)確傳達(dá)作者意圖的基礎(chǔ)上,要把目標(biāo)讀者放在心中,所以當(dāng)學(xué)生們把譯文初稿交來(lái)后,我同意了翻譯風(fēng)格,力爭(zhēng)通俗易懂,將許多長(zhǎng)句分割,使句式符合中文習(xí)慣?!?/p>

      盡管她謙虛地稱(chēng)其精湛的譯文為“輔助”,但我們不妨看看取材于中國(guó)的著名作家海斯勒是怎樣看待其作品的中文版讀者的:“過(guò)去幾年間,我察覺(jué)到中國(guó)人對(duì)于自己的社會(huì)產(chǎn)生了一種新的好奇感?!袊?guó)讀者對(duì)這本書(shū)的接受方式,跟美國(guó)、英國(guó)以及其他歐洲國(guó)家的讀者沒(méi)有太大的不同。他們認(rèn)識(shí)到他們文化中所包含的復(fù)雜性,也理解為什么一個(gè)外國(guó)人會(huì)聚焦于幾個(gè)特定具體的地方進(jìn)行探究。并且他們明白,沒(méi)有人能夠?qū)χ袊?guó)做最后的斷言,外國(guó)人的視角有用,中國(guó)人的視角同樣有用……在這樣一個(gè)復(fù)雜的國(guó)度,盡可能多地聽(tīng)到不同的聲音,總歸是有用的。”

      It was a winter noon that I first met with David Reinsfield. He came to visit me at the publishing house. He wore an outdoor jacket in a nondescript color and carried a backpack, the disheveled gray hair sticking out from under the hunting cap. David Reinsfield is a lecturer at a local college in Hangzhou. Many people around me are under the impression that foreign teachers in Chinese universities are good speakers but are not particularly good at writing, but Reinsfield is atypical. He looked shy that day. And his New Zealand English accent was a big challenge to me, for I hadnt spoken English for a few years. Fortunately we soon ironed out the communication problems and began to talk seriously about his collection of short stories titled (Going Home).

      David Reinsfields childhood was profoundly shaped by the beauty of Aotearoa, the Māori name for New Zealand, meaning “the Land of the Great White Clouds”. He was given the freedom to roam unimpeded while exploring, giving rise to his creative writing.

      He said he had spent ten years in China, absorbing Chinese culture continuously. He first wrote poems and then toyed with the idea of writing short stories. “Like my Chinese friends, I also see how the urban civilization invaded traditional culture and how life has turned from a slow pace to a fast pace and how laborers had to move to big cities to make a living,” he explained about his short stories. He became more enthusiastic when talking about his experience in China. “China is seeing huge changes. Some people are thriving and some struggling. They are friendly to each other and holding on to what they have. I wrote four simple stories about courage and tenacity, stories about how some people in adverse circumstances fight back and get redemption. They are heroes in their own stories,” he said, searching my eyes to see if I agreed with him. I didnt respond directly. I asked, “Do you think those foreigners not living in China understand China?” He replied, “They are curious. Sometimes they think they do, but actually they dont.”endprint

      After he left, I began reading the four stories. They are indeed simple stories and the characters are indeed ordinary people living in the bottom strata of a society. A grandma staying at home and taking care of her grandson, a construction-worker-turned street artist who lost a leg in a work-related accident, a wage-earner in a big city who promises to buy his daughter a horse. Unlike some Chinese stereotypes in stories told by some foreigners, these characters do stand out. They have faces and they are no longer shadows in a society of myth, despotism, and poverty.

      After I became editor for the story collection, I had an opportunity to ask Reinsfield of his choice of the non-mainstream characters to play leading roles in his stories. He said, “They are clearly traditionally identified. The roles they play in their lives are clearly defined in China. What I want to say is, we love and respect our family members, but we still have problems. If these problems remain unsolved, they eventually will get us and there will be devil growing in our hearts.”

      Reading the stories made me feel relieved and happy about his meticulous attention to the real life. He dedicates quite a few spaces to the inner life of his characters, making them convincing. They are characters in China and these stories are realistic.

      I feel that his stories are important because they provide Chinese readers a new panoramic perspective to examine our culture and society, helping us to break away from stereotypic views of ourselves.

      I must say thanks to Wang Lei, vice president of Business School of Hangzhou Gongshang University, and her students. She recommended Reinsfields stories to me. The translations done by her students at her classes were used as a very solid foundation for her final translation. “I think translators must be loyal to the author. They must have target readers in their hearts and accurately convey what the author wants to say. We consulted the author about some difficulties we had in translating, especially those that resulted from cultural differences. We offered some corrections to some details that the author had got wrong.”endprint
