2014年12月25日下午3時(shí)，英國女王伊麗莎白二世在電視和廣播中發(fā)表了一年一度的圣誕致辭。在紀(jì)念一戰(zhàn)爆發(fā)一百周年之際，英國女王一再強(qiáng)調(diào)“反思”的重要性，并對抗擊埃博拉的醫(yī)護(hù)人員表達(dá)了由衷的敬意。

In the ruins of the old Coventry Cathedral is a sculpture of a man and a woman reaching out to embrace each other. The sculptor was inspired by the story of a woman who crossed Europe on foot after the war to find her husband.

Casts of the same sculpture can be found in Belfast and Berlin， and it is simply called“reconciliation”.

Reconciliation is the peaceful end to conflict， and we were reminded of this in August when countries on both sides of the first world war came together to remember in peace.

The ceramic poppies at the Tower of London drew millions， and the only possible reaction to seeing them and walking among them was silence. For every poppy a life; and a reminder of the grief of loved ones left behind.

No one who fought in that war is still alive， but we remember their sacrifice and indeed the sacrifice of all those in the armed forces who serve and protect us today.

在考文垂大教堂的廢墟上，矗立著一座雕像，塑著一對男女在張開雙臂，相互擁抱。一戰(zhàn)后，有一位婦女，徒步橫跨歐洲，找尋自己的丈夫。雕塑家有感于此，遂成此像。

在貝爾法斯特和柏林，也有相同的塑像。人們只簡單地把這種塑像稱做“和解”。

和解是以和平方式結(jié)束對抗。今年（2014年）八月，一戰(zhàn)雙方各交戰(zhàn)國走到了一起，舉行和平紀(jì)念活動之時(shí)，我們想起了“和解”這個(gè)詞。

倫敦塔上，陶瓷的罌粟花令萬人矚目。徜徉其間，人們看到它們唯一可能的反應(yīng)就是沉默不語。每一朵罌粟花代表著一個(gè)逝去的生命，它們寄予著人們痛失至愛的悲傷。

雖然參加一戰(zhàn)的人們都已離世了，但我們?nèi)跃拺阉麄冊?jīng)的流血犧牲。我們同樣要牢記，現(xiàn)在，為保衛(wèi)我們生活安寧無私奉獻(xiàn)的士兵。

In 1914， many people thought the war would be over by Christmas， but sadly by then the trenches were dug and the future shape of the war in Europe was set.

But， as we know， something remarkable did happen that Christmas， exactly a hundred years ago today.

Without any instruction or command， the shooting stopped and German and British soldiers met in no mans land. Photographs were taken and gifts exchanged. It was a Christmas truce.

Truces are not a new idea. In the ancient world a truce was declared for the duration of the Olympic Games and wars and battles were put on hold.

Sport has a wonderful way of bringing together people and nations， as we saw this year in Glasgow when over 70 countries took part in the Common-wealth Games.

It is no accident that they are known as the Friendly Games. As well as promoting dialogue between nations， the Commonwealth Games pioneered the inclusion of parasports within each days events.

As with the Invictus Games that followed， the courage， determination and talent of the athletes captured our imagination as well as breaking down divisions.

The benefits of reconciliation were clear to see when I visited Belfast in June. While my tour of the set of Game of Thrones may have gained most attention， my visit to the Crumlin Road Gaol will remain vividly in my mind.

What was once a prison during the troubles is now a place of hope and fresh purpose;a reminder of what is possible when people reach out to one another， rather like the couple in the sculpture.

Of course， reconciliation takes different forms.In Scotland after the referendum many felt great disappointment， while others felt great relief;and bridging these differences will take time.

Bringing reconciliation to war or emergency zones is an even harder task， and I have been deeply touched this year by the selflessness of aid workers and medical volunteers who have gone abroad to help victims of conflict or of diseases like Ebola， often at great personal risk.

英德兩軍陣地沒得到任何人的指令或命令，雙方就自動停火了，士兵們相向走到開闊地，聚在一起，互贈禮物，合影留念。這就是圣誕?；鹑?。

戰(zhàn)時(shí)停火并非什么新觀念。古時(shí)候，在奧運(yùn)會期間，雙方也會宣布休戰(zhàn)，不論大的戰(zhàn)役部署還是具體的戰(zhàn)場爭奪，都要暫時(shí)罷手，為奧運(yùn)盛會讓路。

體育比賽的確是一種絕妙的方式，就像今年在格拉斯哥舉辦英聯(lián)邦運(yùn)動會，匯集了來自70多個(gè)國家的人民，大家濟(jì)濟(jì)一堂，同場競技。

友誼賽的意義眾所周知，絕非偶然。英聯(lián)邦運(yùn)動會不僅促進(jìn)了國家間的對話溝通，同時(shí)也首創(chuàng)性地把殘疾人運(yùn)動項(xiàng)目納入每天的賽事。

在隨后的“不可征服運(yùn)動會”上，運(yùn)動員們所表現(xiàn)出來的勇氣、決心和才干不僅令我們心馳神往，同時(shí)，也打消了彼此心中的隔閡。

今年6月，我出訪貝爾法斯特，處處顯現(xiàn)了和解所帶來的好處。盡管人們更受關(guān)注我參觀《權(quán)利的游戲》拍攝現(xiàn)場，然而，我自己卻對去克拉姆林路監(jiān)獄念念不忘。

過去世事多舛，一度陰森恐怖的監(jiān)獄，如今成了人們的希望之所而得以善加利用;它又一次佐證了，人們彼此敞開心扉，會多么美妙，而不再是塑像中那對夫妻如此苦情地?fù)肀Я恕?/p>

當(dāng)然，和解的方式多種多樣。公投后的蘇格蘭，有人深感失望，有人欣慰莫名，若能彼此心意相通，還需要時(shí)間。

在交戰(zhàn)或事件突發(fā)之地，要雙方懷和解之念就更是難上加難了。今年，醫(yī)護(hù)志愿者的無私精神再次打動了我，他們甘愿以身犯險(xiǎn)，毅然踏出國門，去抗擊埃博拉，去救治病患。

For me， the life of Jesus Christ， the prince of peace， whose birth we celebrate today， is an inspiration and an anchor in my life.

A role model of reconciliation and forgiveness， he stretched out his hands in love， acceptance and healing. Christs example has taught me to seek to respect and value all people， of whatever faith or none.

Sometimes it seems that reconciliation stands little chance in the face of war and discord. But， as the Christmas truce a century ago reminds us， peace and goodwill have lasting power in the hearts of men and women.

On that chilly Christmas Eve in 1914 many of the German forces sang Silent Night， its haunting melody inching across the line.

That carol is still much-loved today， a legacy of the Christmas truce， and a reminder to us all that even in the unlikeliest of places hope can still be found.

那首圣誕頌歌如今依然為世人摯愛，圣誕休戰(zhàn)的傳奇往事提醒我們所有人，即便在最不可能的時(shí)間和地點(diǎn)，仍然會透進(jìn)希望的光芒。

譯析

英譯漢的“補(bǔ)白”

在我譯這篇講話時(shí)，網(wǎng)上已有譯稿，但有些譯文處理上硬傷略重，故試譯本文，以期切磋。

這篇英文很有特點(diǎn)，簡練而感人。譯者如何讓譯文的文脈貫通，把原文要表達(dá)的感情在譯文中有所體現(xiàn)，就要根據(jù)對字里行間的理解，做中國水墨畫中類似“補(bǔ)白”的工作。

“補(bǔ)白”要按照上下文的關(guān)系及感情取向，適當(dāng)為之，不可添油加醋或望文生義。運(yùn)用這一技巧，靈活度較大，對譯者個(gè)人修為要求較高，不易量化規(guī)定具體分寸，因此，極少在標(biāo)準(zhǔn)翻譯教材中提及。但在翻譯實(shí)踐中，這一技巧卻無時(shí)不需要使用。用好這一技巧，思維邏輯和文脈就會暢通，譯文就會感人。

以下試舉幾例網(wǎng)上譯文，做一比較：

1.第一段譯文：在考文垂大教堂的廢墟上有一尊雕塑，一男一女張開雙臂擁抱彼此。這尊塑像源自于一個(gè)女人在戰(zhàn)后以步行的方式橫跨歐洲千里尋夫的故事。

分析：如果譯者是做口譯，那么，復(fù)述得沒問題。但是，筆譯就應(yīng)該像“嚼甘蔗”，要把原文每一點(diǎn)營養(yǎng)吸出來。要用中文特色的“小短句，流水句”，抽絲剝繭般，把每一層意思展現(xiàn)在讀者眼前。

2.倫敦塔頂?shù)奶沾衫浰诨ㄈf人矚目，但真正看到它們并且在它們中間穿過的時(shí)候，你唯一的反映就是沉默。每一朵罌粟花代表一個(gè)逝去的生命，也是對至親們的哀思。

分析：這句話的錯(cuò)誤很“隱蔽”，字面上幾乎“無懈可擊”，但這要上升一個(gè)層次來看。首先，英國女王講話不可能是“溫吞水”，這句話要表達(dá)什么感情？譯文如何去連貫，使之暢通？

3.1914年的時(shí)候，很多人以為戰(zhàn)爭會在圣誕前結(jié)束，不過不幸的是，戰(zhàn)壕卻在進(jìn)一步擴(kuò)大，歐洲的戰(zhàn)局也初步形成。

分析：對原文理解有誤，譯文取向因此就歪了。

4.“運(yùn)動”也是一個(gè)將所有人和國家匯聚在一起的極佳方法，比如今年的格拉斯哥，超過70多個(gè)國家參加的英聯(lián)邦運(yùn)動會。

分析：英漢語序有別;另外，這句話翻得挺像說明文，文氣不對。

5.曾經(jīng)紛爭中的監(jiān)獄如今卻是一個(gè)充滿希望和主旨鮮明的地方，提醒大家擁抱彼此已成可能，而不再像雕像中的那對夫妻那樣。

分析：這句是標(biāo)準(zhǔn)的沒理解原文的“硬翻”?？春罅钊瞬恢?。上邊我提到的“補(bǔ)白”，其中一種作用就是把講話者的意思給譯入語讀者闡釋清楚。

6.對于我來說，耶穌——和平之君，他的生日，也就是我們圣誕慶祝的原因，是我生命中的鼓舞和依靠。

分析：在網(wǎng)上的譯文里，譯者對這句英文寫了“超贊之句：我生命中的鼓勵(lì)和依靠”，但是，他這句贊美語本身就翻錯(cuò)了。能意識到英文中的妙句，這是第一步;而如何理解到位，如何表達(dá)好，這才是譯者該做的呢！

7，那首圣誕頌歌今天依然倍受歡迎，是圣誕體戰(zhàn)的遺產(chǎn)，也是在提醒我們：即使在最絕望的地方，希望仍在。

分析：作為英國女王講話的結(jié)尾處，應(yīng)該是高潮。其中一個(gè)原因是：理解的隨意和不細(xì)致，如found這個(gè)詞，是“被找到”的意思，這應(yīng)該是開掘，升華全文的切入點(diǎn)，但顯然，這一細(xì)節(jié)被譯者忽略了。
