An Analysis of English Sports News Reporting on the Internet from the Perspective of Stylistics

◆Abstract：With the development of society，English sports news on the Internet is receiving more and more attention.The objective of this paper is to analyze the stylistic feature of English sports news on the Internet from the perspective of news reporting and electronic English.The paper applies Quantitative Research Method.The stylistic analysis of English sports news on the Internet may have a significant effect on stylistic research.

1 Introduction

A new study of mobile device users indicates that almost half use their smart phone or surf the Internet to get some kinds of local news or information.The 2018 World Cup is a world event which has an epoch-making significance for the development of sports.The author takes the report of the 2018 World Cup as an example of the study，and analyzes the stylistic features of English sports news report from China Daily Website.

2 A Stylistic Analysis of English Sports News Reporting on the Internet

As the result of the medium of the sample news report，the stylistics features could be analyzed not only from the perspective of news reporting，but also from the angle of varieties in relation to media. Therefore，based on medium the stylistic features of English news report for sports will be analyzed deeply.

2.1 At the lexical level

The English news report on the Internet is formal in style，especially in sports news.There are rarely use colloquialisms，slang or jargons.However，the specific words for sports could be found frequently.Clippings are used flexibly in electronic news report for sports，which could draw attention and be brief and short.For example，F(xiàn)IFA / FA Cup is Fédération Internationale de Football Association; CA means Copa América .

2.2 At the syntactic level

In the sample text，the journalist prefers to use simple but complete sentence with active voice.There are 29 sentence in the sample report with active voice except the sentences with the passive voice.The grammar of the sentence must be right.Sentences are connected closely by many connections to achieve fluency.Therefore the organization is logical.

For example，“No worries，Portugals World Cup ended with a loss.” “Once again，both men have failed to replicate their club success for their countries.” “Too often，his World Cup failures were compared to Maradonas successes.”.Most importantly，Cavani and Mbappe had more support and less pressure.We could see the fluent reports is achieved by following connective words “most importantly”，“no worries”，“too often”，“Once again”.

2.3 At the graphological level

Different types and formats represent different function in the whole text.In this report，the title is written with huge size and font to draw readers attention，while it forms an obvious contrast with the time and lead of relative smaller type size.The content of picture is written with the special type and font compared with the body type.The annotation of the picture conveys a salient but rational opinion and feeling of the figure.

3 Conclusion

Based on the basic theories of stylistics，this paper discusses the basic characteristics of English sports news on the Internet，and analyzes the unique style of English sports news from the aspects of the English of News Reporting and Electronic English with written form.The author conclude features of English News Reporting on the Internet from the perspective of graphological，phonological，lexical，syntactic/grammatical，semantic categories.However，although the study is still very limited in the analysis of the specific usage of English sports news，the analysis is significant for the study of English sports news on the Internet.Meanwhile，we need to do further exploration of this kind of news reports.
