The most common surnames in China last year were Wang and Li, with each name used by more than 100 million people, according to an analysis of statistics from the countrys population information system.
Zhang, Liu, Chen, Yang, Huang, Zhao, Wu and Zhou rounded out the top ten surnames, according to the report published by the Ministry of Public Security.
The statistics revealed that there were 6,150 surnames in use across mainland China last year and 23 had more than 10 million users, reported Chinese media China.org.cn.
It also stated that almost 85 percent of Chinas 1.4 billion population use traditional surnames listed in the Baijiaxing (The Hundred Family Surnames). Composed in the early Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD), the ancient Chinese text actually contained 411 surnames before being later expanded to 504.
While it is common for Chinese women to keep their own surname after marriage and children to carry their fathers family name, there has been an increase in the number of people having both parents surnames in their names over the past 30 years. According to the report, the figure has jumped from 118,000 in 1990 to 1.1 million at the end of 2018.
In China there are no fixed lists of first names. Instead, parents can choose practically from all the words in the Chinese vocabulary, providing the words have positive connotations. Chinese first names usually consist of one or two characters.
