August is one month in which no national holidays are scheduled. The month is popular for family vacations and road trips， so expect high capacity in seashore or mountain towns. In general， cities are less crowded in August because residents are on vacation. As for activities， look for lots of things to do， from concerts to museum days to outdoor movie screenings. This is also the month when some state fairs get underway. Following are the festivals and events that happen each August in the USA.

First Thursday in August—Worlds Longest Yard Sale. Truly an American event， the Worlds Longest Yard Sale takes place along Highway 127 near Jamestown， Tennessee. Part flea market， part fair， the yard sale has thousands of vendors1， even more attendees2， and lasts for four days.

Try the many delicious lobster dishes， from lobster bisque to lobster rolls， and learn more about the states top crustacean4 and the men and women who make a living capturing lobsters in Maines chilly waters.

Mid-August—Sturgis Motorcycle Rally5. Held every year in South Dakota since 1938， the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is the USAs oldest and largest events for motorcycle enthusiasts6.

Mid-August—World Famous Payson Rodeo7. The Payson Rodeo in Payson， Arizona， is the worlds oldest continuous rodeo， having been established in 1884. The three-day event features bull riding， calf roping， music， and food.

End of August—Burning Man Festival. Taking place in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada， the Burning Man Festival is unlike any other. It calls for all festival goers to participate in the creation of experimental art （performing or making sculptures）. It ends with a ritual burning of a large wooden sculpture8 in the shape of a man （thus the name）.
