Chinas Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibited in Nepal

An exhibition of “New Innovation of Handicraft – Chinas Intangible Cultural Heritage” kicked off on November 6, offering Nepali people insight into Chinas rich and abundant art and culture.

The two-week event, jointly organized by the China Cultural Center in Nepal, Network of International Culturalink Entities, and the China Arts and Entertainment Group, was held in the Patan Museum.

The exhibition showcased the latest developments in the achievements of Chinese handicrafts, which are among the most intuitive expressions of vitality and charm of traditional Chinese culture, according to the organizer.

The exhibition featured 30 sets of the latest creative works of filigree inlay art, carved lacquerware, and paper-cutting, which also represent the Chinese-style tourism products.

“Such exhibitions are important for both public and art enthusiasts. I believe this event can strengthen cultural relations between the two countries,” said Damodar Gautam, chief of the Department of Archaeology. Appreciating Chinese support in the reconstruction of the quakedamaged heritages of the country, he hoped that China would help Nepal in preserving and protecting other cultural heritages as well.

Besides the display, two renowned Chinese artists also showcased their creative talents on the spot in the area of filigree inlay art and carved lacquerware to the visitors.

Taihu Rock Presented as Gift to San Antonio

A six-and-a-half-ton Taihu rock was presented as a gift to the city of San Antonio, Texas on November 6 to celebrate the sister-city relationship between San Antonio and the Chinese city of Wuxi.

The Taihu rock from the Taihu Lake region in Chinas Jiangsu Province will have a permanent new home – the San Antonio Museum of Art. Along with the rock, 26 works of Chinese painting, calligraphy, ceramics, jade carving, gold and silver from the Wuxi Museum will be put on exhibit in the San Antonio Museum of Art until next March. Some of the works are national treasures that have never been displayed overseas before.

Sun Guoxiang, vice secretary general of the standing committee of Wuxi municipal peoples congress, said that since Wuxi and San Antonio forged a sistercity relationship in 2012, cultural, economic, and educational exchanges between the two cities have been more and more frequent. “This Taihu rock will bring us one step closer to each other,” he said.

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg said the Taihu rock has become a window into China. “Our two cities share friendship and dedication to bring communities together through art, history, and a mutual desire to learn from one another,” he said.

Chinese Consul General in Houston Cai Wei said in a speech that the dedication of the Taihu rock “is a symbol of building up more connections and platforms to facilitate people-to-people exchanges and mutual understandings.”

Dozens of people from the Chinese Consulate General in Houston, the Wuxi delegation, and the San Antonio Museum of Art as well as some local art enthusiasts attended the ceremony.

Exchange Activity Featuring the Silk Road Starts in Rome

A cultural exchange activity featuring the Silk Road started on November 1 in the Italian capital city of Rome with an artistic performance. The opening ceremony, themed “Meeting across Millennia: Cultural Interactions along the Enchanting Silk Road,” was attended by more than 700 guests from all walks of life.

Lu Guangjin, director general of the Department of Human Rights of Chinas State Council Information Office, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony, saying friendship between the Chinese and Italian people is becoming even firmer as time goes by. The ancient Silk Road, once connecting Changan, an ancient Chinese capital, and Rome, is regaining its vitality in the new era, said Lu. He believes that this activity will further boost mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples and promote joint construction of the Belt and Road.

Chinese Ambassador to Italy Li Junhua said that next year will mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Italy, and the two sides will hold the Year of Culture and Tourism to further cement their peopleto-people bonds.
