第五章 迪肯
Activity A Reading for comprehension
Ⅰ.
Chapter Five has two clues:one is that Mary confided her secret garden to the amiable and trustworthy Dickon and asked him to tend it with her;the other is that at their first meeting,Mary thought her uncle Mr Craven was much gentler than he was said to be.
Ⅱ.

(7)self-centered(8)demanding(9)acquired
2.(1)Archibald(2)Misselthwaite(3)crooked
(4)indifferent (5)difficult(6)gentler
(7)deformed(8)higher and more rounded
(9)kind,handsome but sorrowful
Ⅲ.
1.First of all,Dickon's family name Sowerby is very suggestive. To sow is to plant.Dickon has a name that resonates with gardening, and he planted not only real seeds, but the seeds of love, health and human compassion.Secondly, his upbringing on the wild moors made him closely connected to nature and gifted in looking after all living things—people, plants and animals.Thirdly, his gentleness and kindness made him act as a kind of mentor for Mary to improve both health and happiness.
2.The sight of Mary's thinness and delicacy excited within Mr Craven a twinge of sympathy for little Mary and convinced him of her need for liberty and fresh air outdoors. His quick consent without hesitation shows he cared for Mary's well-being and understood her love for gardening.Whatever was the reason for his misery,he was generous at least when he dealt with Mary.
Activity B Reading for writing
Ⅱ.
The rhetoric device of allusion is mainly used for Dickon when Mary first met him.
“He was sitting under a tree, with his back against it,playing on a rough wooden pipe.He had glorious rust-coloured hair and blue eyes looking like the colour of the sky.He was sitting beneath a tree, perfectly still.Around him, rabbits, pheasants and squirrels had gathered. It appeared as if they were all drawing near to watch him and listen to the strange low little call his pipe seemed to make.”
In these sentences, the reference to the pagan god Pan—god of shepherds and hunters in Greek mythology who played on the pipes too—gives a dreamlike and magical touch to the novel and makes the character of Dickon more attractive as a moor boy who can charm all living things—be they plants, animals or people.
Ⅲ.
First of all,Mrs Medlock is bitterly sarcastic, tart, nasty, and in Mary's words,“as sour as a crab apple”.She disliked children in general and treated them in a disagreeable manner.Mrs Medlock is a popular picture of the old-fashioned housekeeper who spent all her life being a formidable and unfulfilled spinster, drinking tea in the sitting room, and establishing her ubiquitous authority with her usual scowl and gravity when speaking.
Mrs Medlock seemed little disturbed by Mary's meaningful look, nor she felt surprised at Mr Craven's permission that Mary could run wild about Misselthwaite. She was actually relieved to get rid of little Mary—a tiresome charge at all!
“Behave yourself, young lady! Go and play with your bloody earth.Never try to dare me to attention. If you do,I'll show you tears won't work here on me!”said Mrs Medlock vehemently with her usual vicious scowl.

The snake was ready to attack me.I was too frightened to move.I felt as if my heart would stop beating.Snakes had always been my biggest fear.Papal kept growling behind me all the time as if she was warning the snake to keep off.To my relief, the snake slowly backed away. Then in a flash it was gone.I breathed a sigh of relief. “Papal! Papal! Oh sweet Papal! Oh lovely Papal!”With it,I ran to Papal.
Then I found myself hugging Papal. She rubbed her neck against my knee and I rubbed my cheek against her neck. When she licked my face I didn't refuse again.Later we became the best friends. From that day on,Papal and I could never be parted.Swimming in the pond or taking a walk,we were always together. And no matter how far we went into the forest,Papal never lost her way and always brought me back home before sundown.

Dear Paul,
Glad to hear from you.Learning that you have made a decision to take a gap year after graduation,I am writing to share with you my idea on the gap year.
In China,it is a new trend for young graduates to take a gap year. Its advantages and disadvantages are under increased scrutiny among the public. Some argue taking a gap year can enrich young people's life and help them find out their way, while others point out that it is a waste of time to do so.As far as I am concerned, taking a gap year can do good to us,for not only can it broaden our horizons but also it can pave the way for our future career.
I am determined to take a gap year after graduation. There are some activities to get involved with. For instance,I will apply for an internship in a bank because of my interest in finance. Then,I am looking at some volunteer programs, such as community work.Last,I am ready to have a bike tour in Tibet with my friends, which is being planned these days.I am sure these experiences will tremendously benefit me in mind and body.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

To better understand forests'responses to climate change, researchers use two tree features of stature and reproduction to polish vegetation models.Admittedly, the new model confirms that“l(fā)ong-lived pioneers” account for a large part of forest biomass and are crucial for carbon storage. Therefore, researchers will use the predictive model to direct forest management strategies.

You're an excellent player. With you on the team,we have every hope of beating Lingnan.
Let's try our best together!

Task 5
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. My horse turned to the left to avoid the little rabbit as I held on tightly and tried not to fall. Then my dad turned around and shouted,“Hold on!”All of a sudden, the horse began to run.My dad tried to keep up behind us.For a few minutes my horse slowed down to a trot and then stopped beside a river.I looked around and realized that we were way off the track.
We had no idea where we were and it was getting dark.Luckily the stars came out and gave us a little light when we were looking for the way to the farm house. After what must have been several hours,we suddenly heard the sound of sheep in the distance. My dad and I both rode our horses towards the sound of the sheep. As we got closer we saw Uncle Paul with a flashlight waving us over. What a night!
