I was typing papers for new school students when Mama called. We talked about some senseless things for a while before she finally told me about it. “Well, Donner, there’s this class up at the high school this summer,” she said. “They say they can teach me to read and write. I’m trying to decide whether...”
“Of course, you should do it! That would be so wonderful. I’d be so proud of you,” I answered. She was 63 and had survived two alcoholic (酗酒的) husbands and was an expert at buying and selling garage sale junk to keep food on her own table and buy Christmas presents for me and my brother’s kids. She used food stamps to buy food and other goods. Mama laughed, seemingly with relief. “Well, you know, I’d about gotten used to being the silliest old lady in town,” she said.
It turned out that her neighbor had found the class for her. The young woman had been doing Mama’s “business” for a while in my absence, helping to allay my guilt (內(nèi)疚) over leaving Mississippi. The friend was a little crazy, but Mama liked her. She was real and, by then, I hated pretension as much as Mama did. When I was little she would tell me, “Remember, Donner Kay, nobody’s better than anybody else.”
Three months into the class, Mama left a message on my answering machine, “Donner, I taught a class tonight!” She was almost singing the words. “The teacher let me teach the class!” She soon wrote me a letter in a careful, boxy print I had never seen, instead of the strange way she had written long family names she had memorized.
The next time I flew home to visit, we both laughed like 12-year-olds as she read words from billboards (告示牌) on the way from the airport. Her grammar was getting better. She kept talking about her classes and the other students.
24. Why did Donner’s mother phone her according to Paragraph 1?
A. To advise Donner to take a course. B. To show her support for Donner.
C. To tell Donner her decision. D. To ask Donner for advice.
25. What can replace the underlined word “allay” in Paragraph 3?
A. Admit. B. Forget. C. Punish. D. Reduce.
26. How did Donner’s mother feel when she left a message for Donner?
A. Astonished. B. Delighted. C. Confused. D. Worried.
27. What does the last paragraph main tell us about the mother?
A. The progress she made. B. Her difficulty she had in learning.
C. The grammar she learned to read and write. D. Her effects in learning.

The Carnival of Brazil is an yearly festival held 46 days before Easter, especially famous for the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. Carnival celebrations are believed to have roots in the festival of Saturnalia, which, adapted to Christianity, became a farewell to bad things in a season of religious discipline to regret Christ’s death and prepare for his coming back to life.
Modern Brazilian Carnival dates back to Rio de Janeiro in 1641. It originally copied the European form of the festival, later taking in elements of native American and African cultures.
In the late 19th century, the strings were introduced in Rio de Janeiro. These were pageant (盛裝游行) groups that paraded (游行) through city avenues performing on instruments and dancing. Today they are known as blocks, consisting of a group of people who dress in costumes or special T-shirts with themes or logos. Blocks are generally connected with particular neighborhoods; they include both a music group and a lot of revelers (狂歡者).
Block parades have become an expressive feature of Rio’s Carnival. Today, the groups are more than 100 in total and increase each year. Blocks can be formed by small or large groups of revelers with a clear title. Before the show, they gather in a square, and then parade in sections of the city, often near the beach.
Carnival time in Rio is very interesting, but is also the most expensive time to visit Rio. Hotel rooms and other lodgings can be up to four times more expensive than the regular rates. There are big crowds at some locations and life is far from ordinary in many parts of town.
28. What can we infer from Paragraph 1 about the Carnival of Brazil?
A. It is often held after Easter. B. It is from Easter and Saturnalia.
C. It is mainly to celebrate the birth of Christ. D. It is a time to get rid of bad things for a new life.
29. When did modern Brazilian Carnival begin?
A. About 100 years ago. B. About 380 years ago.
C. Over five centuries ago. D. Less than two centuries ago.
30. What can we learn about the blocks in Rio de Janeiro?
A. They don’t parade before the show.
B. There are no more than 100 blocks today.
C. They always parade through countryside villages.
D. They are dressed in their special way.
31. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The carnival in Rio de Janeiro. B. The famous carnivals in the world.
C. The way the carnival was introduced in Brazil. D. The happy life of the people in Rio de Janeiro.
D
Does stress cause gray hair? Many people believe that tension (緊張) and stress can cause your hair to lose its color. In fact, it is a silly remark that being upset all the time can result in premature graying (過早老齡化). Here is a closer look at this situation and why some believe that this old wives’ tale could be true.
As one ages, the hairs on the head also age. In fact, just about everything on the human body begins to show signs of wear and tear after a while. The joints wear and hurt when moved and skin wears and becomes wrinkled (有皺紋的). Hairs on the head grow and eventually die. They are replaced, but in the process something else happens.
When new hairs are replaced, the color or pigment (色素) is also added to them. However, as one ages, this pigment becomes less and less available. At first, hairs will have a limited amount of pigment and they will appear to be grayish in color. In time, they will lose all of their pigment and will be white. Many things are known to cause graying, and genetics is a very powerful factor. If one of your parents turns gray at an early age, there is a good chance that you will too. Some people begin the graying process in high school, while others may be over the age of forty.
Constant worry and tension can have many harmful effects on the human body. It is a known fact that stressful times can cause one to lose some hair. It would make sense that if it can cause these problems, perhaps it also may contribute to graying. However, there is no sound evidence to support this.
On the other hand, many medical professionals believe that there may be a link between graying and a constant state of anxiety or tension. Does stress cause gray hair? There is no scientific evidence to support the theory, but it is best to avoid stressful situations.
32. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us?
A. Skin becomes wrinkled with age. B. Every part of the body ages with age.
C. Hairs will grow weak but not die. D. Most parts of the body is replaced with age.
33. What might play the most important role in the graying process?
A. The amount of food people eat and living environment.
B. Genetics and the amount of water people drink.
C. Genetics and the amount of sleeping time.
D. The amount of pigment and genetics.
34. According to the text, continuous pressure may result in a person’s ___ .
A. fitness B. fatness C. hair loss D. weight loss
35. What can we infer from the text?
A. Stress causing gray hair is still in question. B. Gray hair has nothing to do with tension.
C. Stressful situations could be of benefit. D. Worry and tension harm human body.

A patient came to see me about the stress in her life.? One was to make her bed from the moment she woke up until she flew out of the door for work. I suggested she experiment by not making her bed for two weeks. She was shocked, probably thinking I’d been raised by wolves in a forest.
Two weeks later she went into my office beaming (眉開眼笑). She had left her bed unmade for the first time in 42 years—and nothing bad had happened. “And you know what?” she said, “I don’t dry my dishes anymore, either.”
One was discovering that she had choices in her life that she had never seen before. The other was giving herself permission to be less that perfect. This story shows an important principle about managing time: No one can do it all. Each of us has to make choices and accept trade-offs (交易). The problem is, many people choose in ways that put themselves and their health last. They take better care of their houses and cars than they do of themselves.
So what is the solution? There’s an easy way. Decide what you want in your life, and put that first. On a daily basis, that should include regular meals, enough sleep and time with your family.? The choice is yours: whatever makes you feel good about yourself and your life. Take a nap. Take a walk. Stop keeping your house as clean as your mother kept hers. Fill more of your time with want-to-dos instead of have-to-dos.
A. However, she went along with my idea.
B. She described all the things she had to do.
C. This woman had made two major breakthroughs.
D. Most people do not take time to relax themselves.
E. They put everyone else’s needs ahead of their own.
F. The point is to do something for yourself every day.
G. Above all, you needn’t do anything else for yourself regularly.
