If you go to a Chinese restaurant in America, something interesting happens. After the meal, the waiter will bring you a small, moon-shaped cookie. This is a “fortune cookie①”. Break the fortune cookie in half and look inside. Inside every one is a small piece of paper with a message. This message tells your fortune. It may say something like “Your childhood dream will come true!”or “You will take a long trip.” Everyone enjoys getting a fortune cookie, but few people know where the tradition comes from.

The Chinese believe that the fortune cookie is a modern-day moon cake, a traditional Chinese cookie. The Japanese, however say that the fortune cookie is a kind of Senbeis. Senbeis are flat, round rice crackers, which have long been a part of traditional Japanese tea culture. Most Americans believe fortune cookies to be an American invention from the 20th century. Some people say fortune cookies were invented by a Japanese American in San Francisco. It seems people cannot agree on the origin② of the fortune cookie! No matter where they came from or who invented them, fortune cookies are becoming more popular outside America.

And they continue to make people smile with messages of love, success, and good fortune.
