In the United States, college students often share a room with one roommate, and dormitories often have separate floors for men and women. A classic dormitory will likely be decorated by the students with posters. US dormitories are renowned for being untidy, but some universities hire cleaners to help students keep them clean.

Dormitories in South Korea often have stricter rules on students than those in other countries. And, in some dormitories, students must go to bed by midnight. Almost all dormitories are single-sex, and visiting between sexes is not allowed. Some dormitories include single rooms, but most house about ten students in a room.

Student dormitories in Japan are also like those found in the West, but they sometimes have larger rooms that are shared by more people. Dormitories in crowded cities are usually smaller than those in the country. Facilities such as showers are often shared by a large number of students, but the dormitories are generally well-equipped with Internet access and televisions. Many dormitories provide a canteen. Foreign students studying in Japan can also choose to live with a local family, although this can make it harder to make friends at the university,

Students in the UK have a similar system as the US, except that it is rare for students to share a room. Dormitories are known as “Halls of Residence”. Four or five students of ten have their own room in a flat or a house, and share a bathroom and kitchen. Students will pay the university to live in the dormitory, but the price is usually cheaper than living in private accommodation.

      1. What’s the best title of the text?

November is a tough month—not only for single people, but also for many students who will take their mid-term exams. It’s an especially intense time for freshmen because they will take their very first exams at university. They may be worried, but here, their upperclassmen offer advice on studying and preparing for exams.

      “Mathematics gives me a headache”

Ask university students what is the most difficult course, and most of them will give you the same answer: advanced mathematics. This is also true for Dai Shuang, an 18-year-old student studying geodesy and geomatics (測(cè)地測(cè)繪學(xué)) at Wuhan University. “Advanced mathematics pushes mathematics to a whole new level,” he says. “It’s so difficult that I get a headache whenever I think about the exam.”

Solution: following the course is important

Qin Xia, 22, is a finance major at Renmin University of China. In Qin’s opinion, course hours should be valued because it’s difficult to study this course alone. “If students think the class is too difficult or boring they can take notes to stop themselves from getting distracted,” he says. Another part of studying is doing a lot of exercises. “Doing exercises helps in consolidating the knowledge taught in classes and preparing for the exam.” Qin says.

“Learning languages is all about memorizing”

Zhu Tianjiao, 18, is a Japanese major at Shanghai International Studies University. Since the very beginning of campus life, she has felt under pressure. “All of my classmates are straight-A students, which means I have to spare no effort in studying to keep up with them.” she says. Zhu will have her first university exam in two weeks, and she’s very nervous because she doesn’t know how to improve her language proficiency other than by memorizing words and phrases.

Solution: it is a matter of accumulation

Xia Bingcong was in the same position three years ago. The 22-year-old English major at Tsinghua University. According to Xia, memorizing, listening and reading are all equally important in language learning. “After my first failure, I started watching American programs and TV series. I also read English newspapers every day. In one year’s time, I found that my English improved a lot, which made taking exams easy.” she says.

      5. Qin Xia attached the importance to ____.

      A. studying alone???? B. taking notes??????? C. doing exercises????????? D. the course

      6. What confused Zhu Tianjiao a lot?

      A. How to deal with nerve.??????????????????? B. How to improve the ability of language.

      C. How to communicate with others in Japanese.

      D. How to memorize words and phrases.

      7. Xia Bingcong is a ____ at Tsinghua University.

      A. freshman????? B. sophomore????????????? C. junior????????????????????? D. senior

      C

Some of the United States’ biggest banks have closed their doors to students at community colleges, non-profit universities and other less competitive schools, even as they continue to extend government-backed loan to students at the nation’s top universities.

Citibank has been among the most active in rebuilding the list of colleges it serves. JPMorgan Chase, PNC and SunTrust say they have not dropped whole loan plans, but are cutting colleges. Some less-selective four-year colleges, like Eastern Oregon University and William Jessup University, say they have been dropped by some lenders.

The practice suggests that if the credit crisis and poor conditions in the student loan business continue, some of the nation’s neediest students will be hurt most. The difficulty of borrowing money may keep them from attending school or force them to take a semester off. For those who have got student loans, they will end up with less attractive terms and may run a greater risk of dropping out if they have to change lenders in the middle of their college year.

Tuition and loan amounts can be quite small at community colleges. But these institutions, which are a stepping stone to other educational programs or to better jobs, often draw students from the lower ranks of the economic classes. According to the most recent data, about a third of US graduates took out loans, a majority of them guaranteed by the government.

“If put too many obstacles in their way to get a loan, they’ll take a third job or use a credit card,” said Jacqueline K. Bradley, assistant director for financial aid at Mendocino College. “That almost guarantees that they won’t be as successful in their college career.”

Some loan companies have stopped the student loan business entirely, viewing it as unprofitable in the current?? environment.? Students?? attending?? first-class, expensive, public and private four-year universities can expect to remain plentiful. The banks generally say these loans are bigger, more profitable, and less risky, perhaps in part because the banks expect graduates from these universities to earn more.

So far, financial aid administrators say they have been able to find some lenders that students can switch to, but this is costly to students—in money and time.

      8. Who will be the most upset at the news?

      A. A poor student at a top university. ????????? B. A poor student at a community university.

      C. A bank clerk dealing with student loan business.

      D. A teacher from a non-profit university.

      9. With too many obstacles in their way to get a loan, students will probably ____.

      A. switch to top universities?????????????????? B. cancel their credit cards

      C. fail in their exams?????????????????????? D. win a scholarship

      10. When they say something is “government-backed”, they mean it is ____.

      A. guaranteed by the government??????????????? B. dropped by the government

      C. against government ??????????????????????? D. for government
