Old yet Young Rennes
In northwestern France, there is an old yet young city, Rennes, which is one of Jinan’s sister cities. In 2022, the two cities signed the MOU on the Establishment of the 20th Anniversary of Sister City Relations between Jinan and Rennes, continuing to make local efforts for a closer and longer-lasting China-France comprehensive strategic partnership with a focus on sister-city exchanges.
Strolling down the streets of Rennes, you will be attracted by the city’s precious historical and cultural heritage—maisons à colombages. Considering that the city was short of building stone and the forests nearby had rich timber resources, wooden construction technology was extensively used in the 14th and 15th centuries, and remained in use until the 18th century. Rennes has retained more than 280 maisons à colombages, ranking first in Brittany.
When walking in the old town of Rennes, you had better not miss the medieval building—Palais du Parlement de Bretagne that represents the history of the Duchy of Brittany. Built in the 17th century, the building has witnessed the historical changes of Rennes over the recent centuries. The interior is luxuriously decorated, where French ceilings, amazing woodcarvings and meaningful paintings all demonstrate extraordinary charm.
Marché des Lices, as the second largest famous market in France, now has become a tourist attraction of Rennes. Every Saturday morning, hundreds of agricultural producers and food producers may come here with their freshest agricultural and sideline products. Here, tourists can not only taste seasonal vegetables and fruits, but also buy the most authentic specialty products of Brittany.
