In recent years, many AI tools have developed the ability to write emails, book a trip and create artworks using simple information such as text prompts, photographs, etc. In 2023, the world’s first AI art gallery opened at Dead End AI Gallery in Amsterdam, Netherlands where all of the artworks were created using artificial intelligence.
Dead End AI Gallery features the artistic creations of AI machines and algorithms which range from digital paintings to interactive installations. Regarding the one-of-a-kind exhibition, Constant Brinkman from Dead End AI Gallery stated, “We are the first gallery in the world to physically exhibit AI-generated art.”
According to Brinkman, the first step in creating the exhibition saw programmers use software to create AI artists. Then these AI artists started generating their own artworks. While each piece they produce is unique, the pieces are not flawless. Some pieces feature people with six fingers, for example. But Brinkman says the AI artists are getting better with experience. Visitors can buy the paintings they like, but the AI artists determine their price. The price of a single work can range from 3,000 to 10,000 euros.
The exhibition again raised questions about AI-generated art, whether it should be considered alongside human art, and whether it has the capacity to compete with human-created art. Earlier in 2023, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University created an AI-powered robot called FRIDA that is able to create original artworks on a physical canvas? as opposed to the digital canvas used by most AI artists.
However, the public’s reaction to AI art has been mixed. Some are wowed by what AI can accomplish, while others don’t think the pieces reflect real art and say that AI art infringes on copyright by using parts of already existing work.
Whether it is considered art or not, the AI gallery is certainly fueling the discussion about how technology can change the art world—specifically since the gallery believes that AI artists and their works will play an important role in the future of the art world.
