Chinese University Develops Super Cold-Resistant E-Skin

Researchers from China's Tianjin University havedeveloped a new type of electronic skin for robotic hands，capable of functioning in extremely cold environments aslow as minus 78 degrees Celsius. This innovation representsa great boon for the country's polar exploration.

An article about the highly stretchable， self-healing，and sensitive electronic skin has been published on theJournal of the American Chemical Society， accordingto Zhang Lei and Yang Jing， who led the research teamat the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology of TianjinUniversity.

Ultralow temperature-tolerant electronic skin can provide polarrobots with tactile feedback， enhancing their ability to explore polarenvironments.

According to Yang， as early as in 2020， the team developed theall-weather self-healing electronic skin， and the new version hasbeen comprehensively upgraded.

The new electronic skin can be wrapped around a robot's palm，and is capable of accurately sensing pressure and recognizing theshape of objects and specific symbols under the extreme cold conditionsof temperatures as low as minus 78 degrees Celsius， accordingto the researchers.

In addition， it has a self-healing function. Even after sustainingdamage， its transmission capability can be fully restored， making itsuitable for polar scientific research missions.

"We look forward to broader application prospects of this newachievement in China's polar scientific research and other researchfields，" said Yang.
