“牛年”譯為 the year of the ox。“我屬?！弊g為I was born in the year of the ox．

牛是 cow, cattle。一群牛是 a herd of cattle。五頭牛是 five cows。公牛是 bull。閹牛是 steer, ox。母牛是 cow。不再產(chǎn)奶的母牛是 dry cow。牛犢是 calf。英語(yǔ)習(xí)語(yǔ)a bull in a china shop(闖進(jìn)瓷器店的公牛)，指“笨手笨腳動(dòng)輒闖禍的人”。

18世紀(jì)，蘇格蘭作家 John Arbuthnot寫(xiě)了一本書(shū)，名叫The History of John　Bull，主人公叫做John Bull，用來(lái)代表英國(guó)。從此，John Bull成了英國(guó)和典型英國(guó)人的代名詞，漢語(yǔ)譯為“約翰?！?。

在西方古代文明中，牛象征力量、財(cái)富和希望。人們用bull market(牛市)表示股市上升之勢(shì)。bear market是“空頭市場(chǎng)”，譯為“熊市”。

西班牙斗牛(Spanish bullfight)是斗牛士(bullfighter, matador)在斗牛場(chǎng)(bullring)與公牛相斗。奔牛(Running of the Bulls)，也是西班牙的民間傳統(tǒng)活動(dòng)。

漢語(yǔ)說(shuō)“他工作像老黃牛。”英語(yǔ)要譯為He works like a horse。漢語(yǔ)說(shuō)“他像牛一樣犟?！庇⒄Z(yǔ)要譯為He is as stubborn as mule。但是漢語(yǔ)的“犟”，可以譯為bull-headed。例如：He is the most bull-headed person that I have ever met(他是我遇到過(guò)的最犟的人)。注意He is as dumb as an ox的意思不是“沉默寡語(yǔ)”，而是“笨拙愚蠢”。英語(yǔ)習(xí)語(yǔ)take the bull by the horns(牽牛抓住牛角)，指“勇于面對(duì)危險(xiǎn)”。

“黃?！被颉包S牛黨”，與牛無(wú)關(guān)，指“票販子”，可以譯為 ticket tout或ticket scalper。▲
