Being amongst one of the first hotels in Batu Feringhi, Penang, the original Lone Pine Hotel was established in 1948. It is located on a beautiful patch of beach-away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
The idea of being the only boutique hotel along the island's coastline led to 'spaces' being explored rather unconventionally. These spaces were designed not just as physical envelopes, but rather emotional connectors between man and nature. With this in mind, it was important to approach the site planning with a high degree of sensitivity and finesse. To achieve this, it was crucial to always observe a balance of built form versus Mother Nature. This balance was largely achieved by the conscious attempt to maximize engagement with nature whilst keeping the building footprints delicate to minimize their physical impact. A high surface to floor ratio and a linear plan were the answer to these sacrosanct criteria.
The first refurbishment in 1998 retained much of the original 'colonial charm'. With the advent of this second refurbishment, the challenge was to somehow retain the spirit and values of the original whilst injecting the place with a new lease of life and to imbue it with a contemporary yet exclusive feel and image. A highly neutral architectural expression was chosen for the new wings housing the additional guestrooms. Conversely, the existing buildings were refurbished to enhance their original character and architectural language of a bygone period. All at once, this enabled the hotel to be portrayed as a modern retreat with all the expected creature comforts of a contemporary resort, whilst still managing to evoke the nostalgia of Penang island's golden era.

The design embraces its natural setting with sumptuous lobbies and open terraces.Openness and intimacy are suffused to create a peaceful and serene atmosphere. Guestrooms are orientated to exploit the panoramic sea views. Designed to open out to a balcony or private courtyard, the guestrooms breathe in the refreshing sea breeze. The partnership between beach, ocean and Casuarinas comes to the fore with the architecture acting only as a backdrop.Latching onto the idea of architecture as a stage for mother nature, the architectural components were chosen from a palette of basic, natural and familiar materials-the likes of concrete blocks, clay bricks, glass and metal. These materials were then assembled in a curious and somewhat unpredictable manner-with the aim of providing varying degrees of perforations reacting to needs of view, ventilation and privacy. These assemblies also resulted, inadvertently,in an array of textures ranging from the prickly clay brick piers to the porous concrete block walls to the slick glass and metal screens. This combination of enclosure and openness together with the multiplicity of textures indirectly gave the building its own, organic-like skin.
Rooms were designed to suit families, couples as well as solitary guests. Luxurious spaces are filled with modern furniture and fittings set against the most basic of finishes in subtle earthy tones.Combined with exclusively designed soft furnishings, this creates a unique atmosphere and perfect balance between luxury and homely familiarity. In a similar vein to the architecture of the buildings, the interiors were also intended to provide varying degrees of flexibility in the way the users could engage the spaces. Each guest room could almost be customized according to the individual guest's preference. Partitions between sleep and bath areas were designed to allow a multitude of variations from completely open-plan spaces to highly enclosed and defined zones. The base idea of space as 'emotional connector' is thus carried through consistently throughout the entire innards of the hotel.
Facilities and amenities such as the swimming pools, spa, bars and restaurants are arranged to complement and frame the vista, being careful always to avoid hampering or distracting in any way the natural beauty of the place.□
