比起《唐頓莊園》和《神探夏洛克》，2012年由BBC1臺(tái)出品的新劇《呼叫助產(chǎn)士》在國(guó)內(nèi)的反響似乎不大，然此劇在英國(guó)的收視表現(xiàn)大有趕超兩“神作”之勢(shì)，目前第二季已播畢。

本片改編自珍妮弗·沃思（Jennifer Worth，1935.9—2011.5）的同名回憶錄，講述的是二十世紀(jì)五十年代貧困的倫敦東區(qū)里一群助產(chǎn)士的故事。作為社區(qū)助產(chǎn)士，沃思和她的同事們騎著自行車穿梭在大街小巷，負(fù)責(zé)八英里內(nèi)所有孕婦的產(chǎn)檢和生產(chǎn)工作，她們幫助無(wú)數(shù)孕婦順利生產(chǎn)，也見(jiàn)證了各種悲歡故事。片中展現(xiàn)了助產(chǎn)士們?cè)诟鞣N環(huán)境下——曬魚(yú)干的棚內(nèi)、沒(méi)水沒(méi)電的小黑屋里克服各種障礙幫孕婦們接生，也展現(xiàn)了孕婦們?cè)诟鞣N身體狀況中——產(chǎn)前感染梅毒、妊娠毒血癥、產(chǎn)后大出血、腦震蕩，仍不滅對(duì)新生命的渴望。劇中各種環(huán)境下的生產(chǎn)鏡頭堪稱重口味，但看過(guò)之后不禁對(duì)母親及助產(chǎn)士們有了更多的敬意。電視劇沒(méi)有回避當(dāng)時(shí)的產(chǎn)婦們所面臨的惡劣生存條件和社會(huì)壓力，只是加入了更多陽(yáng)光燦爛的天氣、患難互助的溫情、戳中情緒的懷舊音樂(lè)，從而吸引了大批觀眾。

沃思本人的經(jīng)歷也頗為傳奇，15歲離校后先是做了秘書(shū)，然后接受培訓(xùn)成為一名護(hù)士，五十年代初去到倫敦并成為一名助產(chǎn)士，1973年她在做了二十多年助產(chǎn)士之后離職，發(fā)展她在音樂(lè)方面的愛(ài)好，成了一名鋼琴和歌唱教師，并到英國(guó)和歐洲各地巡回演出。2002年，她根據(jù)自己親身經(jīng)歷寫(xiě)成的《呼叫助產(chǎn)士》出版，此書(shū)與之后出版的《救濟(jì)院的陰影》（Shadows of the Workhouse）、《再見(jiàn)東區(qū)》（Farewell to The East End）都成為了暢銷書(shū)。雖然沃思沒(méi)能看到自己作品改編的電視劇，但她“欽點(diǎn)”的米蘭達(dá)·哈特（在劇中飾演Chummy Brown）不負(fù)使命，憑借《呼叫助產(chǎn)士》奪得了2013年度全英電視獎(jiǎng)的劇情劇最佳女演員獎(jiǎng)。

Jenny Lee （voice of mature Jenny）： I must have been mad. I could have been an air hostess. I could have been a model. I could have moved to Paris or been a concert pianist. I could have seen the world， been brave， followed my heart. But I didnt. I 1）side-stepped love and set off for the East End of London， because I thought it would be easier. Madness was the only explanation.

Midwifery is the very stuff of life. Every child is conceived in love， or lust， and born in pain followed by joy， or by tragedy and anguish. Every birth is attended by a midwife. She is in the thick of it. She sees it all.

I knew nothing of poverty or 2）appalling housing， nothing of lice， of filth， of families sleeping four to a bed， and nothing of the passion that brings on baby after baby， labour after labour. I knew nothing of life itself.

Lady Browne： Whom exactly do you define as worthy， Camilla？ Those people out there？ That policeman downstairs？ Theres an entire dismantled empire needing its worthy honoured. Africa， Malaya， Indias a nightmare. Id sooner you were a missionary than lived like this and walked out with a man like that. Because at least our friends would comprehend it when we told them. Youd be a spinster but…youd be doing good works. And wouldnt be wearing Crimplene.

Chummy： Excellent. Now， slip yourself out of those wet 16）drawers， lie down on your back， legs apart， knees propping upwards and outwards. Im going to examine you and then pop down the road to use the telephone. I think we might treat you to an ambulance.

Cathy： Ive got to get it out！ Oh！

Chummy： Ive changed my mind. Were staying right here. Do you have a cot or any blankets for the baby？

Cathy： No.

Chummy： Have you any hot water？

Cathy： No.

Chummy： Any cold？

Cathy： No！ No！

Chummy： Not to worry. Now， pant for the head. Pant， pant， pant.

Cathy： Ooh！

Lady Browne： But， Camilla…

Chummy： And you neednt advise me about the catering. Ive asked the nuns to organize the buffet. Sandwiches and trifle.

Lady Browne： In which case， will you at least let me take you to 24）Norman Hartnell and buy you a wedding gown？ Chummy： You can take me to Norman Hartnell， and buy me a skirt suit. Preferably Crimplene.

In the East End， I found grace and faith and hope， hidden in the darkest corners. I found tenderness in squalor and laughter amid filth.
