Nursing Care for a Child with Allergic Rhinitis
Comments
It is always an unpleasant experience for us when our children are sick even if it is only a minor disease. The parents are often upset. So nurses should introduce and explain everything before the treatment to alleviate their doubts. We need to pay special attention to our attitude when talking to the patient’s parents. We must make the parents believe that we will work very hard with them for their children’s health. This kind of nursing care can result in a much better outcome.

Heart Disease and Infection
Background
Eight month old baby boy, Feng-Feng, was admitted to the hospital because of congenital heart disease, and bronchus pneumonia. Because of the child’s recurrent fever, restless, constant crying and endless screaming, his parents were frustrated and turned against the medical staff. The nurse came to measure the baby’s body temperature again and talked to the parents. This was the baby’s first hospital admission after discovery of his congenital heart disease from the physical examination.
Interactions
Nurse: Hello, Feng-Feng’s mom. How is your baby doing? I’m here to take his body temperature. (Taking the baby’s rectal temperature)
Patient’s Mother: What is his temperature?
Nurse: 39.2 ℃.
Patient’s Mother: What’s the matter? Our child has been in the hospital for two to three days. Why hasn’t his fever gone down?
Nurse: Don’t worry too much. Your child’s body immunity is poor. The fever will be down after his infection is under control.
Patient’s Mother: He is not your baby so you don’t have to worry. He’s having such a high fever, how can we not worry.
Nurse: It’s the great love of parents all over the world. I can understand how you feel and I also hope your baby will recover quickly.
