“Mommy,I got something for you!”Cody ran through the door after school. His face wore a big smile. He waved something in his hand.“It’s a pen,but not just like any pen. It’s a lucky pen!”He handed me the pen proudly, waiting for my reaction1.
I looked at the pen in my hand. There was nothing special about it.It looked just like any other pen in my drawer. At that moment,I didn’t realize how special it was or how much I would treasure it.
I had made the decision to be a writer, but I was afraid of being refused by the publishers again and again. The night before,I told my husband my fear when I thought Cody wasn’t listening.“What if nobody likes my writing and I fail?”But Cody did hear what I said. Now he stood in front of me,“You don’t have to be afraid now,”he said,“This pen will make your stories great and everyone will love you.”
Tears filled my eyes, even if I haven’t sold the first book.I had everything I could ever need. And I felt lucky already, just by having Cody in my life, especially when I heard what he did to get it.At lunch,Cody heard an older boy talking about having a lucky pen.He decided to get it for me.The boy wouldn’t agree but Cody didn’t give up.In the end,he traded his favorite transformer2toy and a box of crayons3——his most important things for that pen, just to make me feel better.
I still have that pen, though it’s long out of ink. When a refusal4letter arrives and I start feeling sorry,I look at it and feel how lucky I am.So I value that pen. It’s Cody who I really treasure in my life.
