The bridge crosses the Rhine-Herne Canal, connecting northern and southern recreation areas, and leads to some cycle paths in the Emscher Park.A curved steel box girder with concrete slabs for the bridge deck juts out the concrete abutments:it is suspended to a 45m high back-anchored pylon standing on the northern bank by cables holding 30 stainless steel hangers, positioned every 3m.The two main cables sloping down from the mast are anchored tangentially in the outer side of the deck at a distance from the abutments; starting from the middle of the main suspension cables,a secondary parabolic-shaped suspension cable runs between them,in order to reduce the length of the central hangers.Being partially free from cables and almost distant from the mast, the structure owes a singular constructional appearance that produces a clear and transparent shape:the deck appears as a continuous path surprisingly curving in the air over the water.

LIU Chen:The integration of force and beauty is not necessarily dependent on super structures. It is reflected on the quiet canal in North Rhine-Westphalia as well as in ancient Roman aqueducts and San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. The footbridge on the 100-year-old Rhine-Herne Canal boasts a privileged location:the government of North Rhine-Westphalia decided in 1988 to carry out the Internationale Bauausstellung Emscher Park program to achieve a paradigm shift from the "rust belt" towards a green, modern and wealthy metropolitan area in the Ruhr region. With its rainbow-like form and innovative, dexterously weight-lifting structure, the bridge not only embodies consummate integration of force and beauty, but also symbolizes the happy union of old and new along the banks of the canal.
DOU Pingping:The Rhine-Herne Canal footbridge creates a seamless connection between the banks. As the deck rises above the ground along the canal, one gets alternative waterside perspectives even before crossing the bridge. Then the slender deck and its minimal stainless steel hangers draw one's attention to the leaning mast elegantly balanced on its offset concrete base, creating a sense of weightlessness. The semicircular bridge offers pedestrians and cyclists a smooth experience across the canal. When reaching the middle section of the bridge, one experiences a sudden sensation of being in-the-middle-of-nowhere.It is more like standing on the bow of a ship about to set sail.It is a precious moment of the day to open up and catch your breath.
