Hailed as the 21st century's flagship passenger aircraft, the Airbus A380 has two floors, provides up to 860 people in singleclass configuration, and has a flight range of about 15,000 km -sufficient to fly nonstop from Asia to Europe.
SPACE: ENOUGH FOR 20 DOUBLE-DECKER BUSES
The Airbus A380 has a wingspan of 79.8 metres, a length of 73 metres, a height of 24.1 metres (equivalent to the height of a six-storey building), and a maximum take-off weight of 560 tons. It is so large that it can pack in 20 double-decker buses. To support the huge fuselage, it has fi ve landing gears and 22 wheels, compared with 10-12 wheels on ordinary airplanes. Each wheel is 1.5 metres in diameter, twice the size of the wheels of ordinary Boeing 737 jetliners.
POWER: EQUlVALENT TO THAT OF 3,500 CARS
But strong landing gears and wheels are not enough for the superjumbo jet to take off. It must also have a great power system in order to meet the unprecedented challenge. Four engines, six and a half tons each, each with about 20,000 components, are the source of all the power that the superjumbo needs. At takeoff, the engines provide as much propelling force as 3,500 cars do together, and each suck in 1.25 tons of air per second.
FUEL TANK: AS BlG AS 1.4 STANDARD SWlMMlNG POOLS
However, where is all the fuel stored in this huge bird? And how much fuel does it require? The fact is that the wings themselves are the tanks. There are ten fuel tanks with a capacity of 253 tons of fuel, 2.5 times as much as that of Boeing 737 jetliners. It takes as long as nearly 50 minutes to refuel the wings. Its wings hold the equivalent of 1.4 swimming pools. Now you know why an aircraft of such a size can fl y for so long.
PASSENGER VOLUME: 3 TlMES OF BOElNG 737
The jet's giant size is also ref l ected in its internal space, which is plenty, with two passenger decks. It is the world's fi rst double-deck passenger airliner. The Airbus A380 offers approximately 60% more seating and fl ooring space than ordinary Boeing 747 jets. Cabin air is recycled every two minutes to keep the atmosphere fresh, while natural light is provided by 220 unique cabin windows. Thanks to the large space, the jetliner can also accommodate 38 standard containers in the cargo deck, which is the largest of all jetliners, underneath the lower passenger deck.
With a number of unprecedented achievements, the A380 jetliner is truly a superstar amongst the passenger airliners. You'll never know the charm of this superjumbo until you really take a ride on it.
