      How to Improve the College Student

      Abstract:For improving the college student's ability of extensive English reading, teachers should clear the teaching objectives and requirements and select the suitable extensive reading textbooks and teach students some extensive reading skills in English Teaching. In order to improve the students' interests in the main, the teacher should do adequate guidance.

      Reading is a kind of written language communication activities, which is a psychological language process for the cognitive construction of written language. Whether to read the sound as the standard, reading can be divided into reading aloud and silently ; reading with different emphasis, reading can be divided into intensive reading and extensive reading. These kinds of readings have mutual connections in the form and mutual promotion. However, the extensive reading can broaden our horizons and increase your vocabulary, which has great significance of improving their language comprehensive utilization ability. Therefore, this paper on how to improve students' reading ability were investigated.

      1. The Goals and Requirements of Extensive English Reading

      Extensive reading can improve students' abilities to quickly perceive the character through a large number of reading and understanding the main content in the article. At the same time, it aims to consolidate and expand the vocabulary and grammar knowledge, to cultivate students' interests and habits of reading English and cultivate the ability of self-study. British scholar Francois - Grellet think: “extensive reading is a skilled activity, mainly to solve the problem of the comprehensive understanding of the article. By reading training, first we should start from a comprehensive understanding and then make the transition to a detailed understanding.

      2. Survey of College Students of English Extensive Reading Status

      (1) Respondent

      Participants are the non English Majors of grade one or two in Shanxi Normal University, including 132 boys and 133 girls.

      (2) Motivation and Beliefs of English Extensive Reading

      The analysis of the data shows that the vast majority of students has the clear reading motivation, 74.8% of the students are aimed to improve the reading ability and 40.7% of the students hope to enlarge their vocabulary, 34.6% of them hope through English extensive reading to expand knowledge, enrich their life and 23.8% of students are for purposes of recreation, 5.1% of students are only in order to complete the tasks.

      In reading beliefs, 19.2% of the students think that extensive reading can improve their overall level of English, 56.5% of the students think that is more helpful, 22.9% of the students think that helps a little, and 1.4% of the students think it is useless.

      (3) Reading Habits

      From the time that students are used for English extensive reading on a weekly, overall reading time is too few:7.9% of students are almost not to do extensive reading, 34.2% of students spend less than 1 hour per week on reading, 38.8% of the students spend 1 - 3 hours every week. 15.4% of the students used 3 - 5 hours as the week reading time , only 3.7% of the students per week spend more than 5 hours.

      3. How to Improve the College Student's Ability of Extensive English Reading

      (1) Select the Appropriate Reading Materials

      A big advantage of the extensive reading is selection material, which has great initiative and variance. Teachers should select and recommend the materials according to the teaching content and objectives. The choice of extensive reading materials should be: moderate difficulty, to accord with college students' practical English level and age characteristics.This is helpful to broaden the students' knowledge structure and stimulate students' interest in reading.

      (2) To Stimulate a Strong Interest in Extensive Reading

      Encouraging students to do more entertainment reading, it means "read for pleasure" is to stimulate students' interest in reading by a relaxation. Teachers should recommend strong interest of English extracurricular reading journals to students to stimulate their extensive reading interests, to help them to establish confidence in learning English and to develop their independent learning abilities.

      (3) Take the student as the center, teacher's appropriate guidance

      Extensive reading is learning, appreciation and expanding knowledge, the most natural and effective ways for the training of comprehensive reading ability for students. Teachers should take the students as the center, let them read independently, and give full play to the role of the students as the main teaching students, and the teachers guide at appropriate time.

      (4)To Choose the Right Time And Environment

      Good environment and proper time will contribute to the students' concentration and increasing the reading efficiency. In general, the time should be selected in a calm mood, the environment should be quiet and comfortable. Especially in the early days of training, especially to pay attention to this point, when you are feeling tired, upset or disturbed, it is best to stop reading.

      4. Conclusion

      Through the development of the teaching of English extensive reading can not only stimulate the students' interests in learning and training students' thinking, but also can cultivate students' perception abilities of English, this is the teaching of intensive reading, which can't be replaced. Intensive reading and extensive reading can be applied simultaneously, and the emphasis on extensive reading training is an ignored effective way to improve students' comprehensive qualities.
