Holidaymakers who are bored with baking beaches and overheated hotel rooms head for a big igloo. Swedish businessman Nile Bergqvist is delighted with his new hotel, the worlds first igloo hotel. Built in a small town in Lapland, it has been attracting lots of visitors, but soon the fun will be over.

In two weeks?time Bergqvists ice creation[作品] will be nothing more than a pool of water. “We dont see it as a big problem,” he says. “We just look forward to replacing it.”

Bergqvist built his first igloo in 1991 for an art exhibition. It was so successful that he designed the present one, which measures roughly 200 square meters. Six workmen spent more than eight weeks piling 1,000 tons of snow onto a wooden base; when the snow froze, the base was removed. “The only wooden thing we have left in the igloo is the front door,” he says.

After their stay, all visitors receive a survival certificate recording their success. With no windows, nowhere to hang clothes and temperatures below 0℃, it may seem more like a survival test than a relaxing[輕松的] hotel break. “Its great fun,” Bergqvist explains, “As well as a good start in survival training.”

The popularity of the igloo is beyond doubt: it is now attracting tourists from all over the world. At least 800 people have stayed at the igloo this season even though there are only 10 rooms. “You can get a lot of people in,” explains Bergqvist. “The beds are three meters wide by two meters long, and can fit at least four at one time.”

      1. Bergqvist designed and built the worlds first igloo hotel because ________.

      A. he believed people would enjoy trying something new

      B. he wanted to make a name for the small town

      C. an art exhibition was about to open

      A. hotel guests will be frightened at thought of the hard test

      B. Bergqvists hotel will soon become a pool of water

      C. holidaymakers will soon get tired of the big igloo

      D. a bigger igloo will replace the present one

      3. according to the text, the first thing to do in building an igloo is ________.

      A. to gather a pool of water B. to prepare a wooden base

      C. to cover the ground with ice D. to pile a large amount of snow

      4. When guests leave the igloo hotel they will receive a paper stating that ________.

      A. they have visited Lapland

      B. They have had an ice-snow holiday

Im seventeen. I had worked as a box boy at a supermarket in Los Angeles. People came to the counter and you put things in their bags for them. And carried things to their cars. It was hard work.

While working, you wear a plate with your name on it. I once met someone I knew years ago. I remembered his name and said, “Mr Castle, how are you?” We talked about this and that. As he left, he said, “It was nice talking to you, Brett.” I felt great, he remembered me. Then I looked down at my name plate. Oh no. He didnt remember me at all, he just read the name plate. I wish I had put “Irving” down on my name plate. If he have said, “Oh yes, Irving, how could I forget you?” I have been ready for him. Theres nothing personal here.

The manager and everyone else who were a step above the box boys often shouted orders. One of these was: You couldnt accept tips[小費]. Okay, Im outside and I put the bags in the car. For a lot of people, the natural reaction[反應] is to take a quarter and give it to me. I say, “Im sorry, I cant.” Theyd get angry. When you give someone a tip, youre sort of being polite. You take a quarter and you put it in their hands and you expect them to say, “Oh, thanks a lot.” When you say, “Im sorry, I cant,” they feel a little put down. They say, “No one will know.” And they put it in your pocket. You say, “I really cant.” It gets to a point where you almost have to hurt a person physically[身體上] to prevent him from tipping you. It was not in agreement with the stores belief in being friendly. Accepting tips was a friendly thing and made the customer feel good. I just couldnt understand the strangeness of some peoples ideas. One lady actually put it in my pocket, got in the car, and drove away. I would have had to throw the quarter at her or eaten it or something.

I had decided that one year was enough. Some people needed the job to stay alive and fed. I guess I had the means and could afford to hate it and give it up.

      1. What can be the best title for this text?

      A. How Hard Life is for Box Boys

      B. Getting along with Customers

      C. Why I Gave up My Job

      D. The Art of Taking Tips

      2. From the second paragraph, we can infer that ________.

      A. the writer didnt like the impersonal part of his job

      B. with a name plate, people can easily start talking

      C. Mr Castle mistook Irving for Brett

      D. Irving was the writers real name

      3. The box boy refused to accept tips because ________.

      A. customers only gave small tips

      B. some customers had strange ideas about tipping

      C. the store forbade the box boys to take tips

      D. he didnt want to fight with the customers

      4. The underlined phrase “put down” in the third paragraph probably means ________.

      A. misunderstood B. defeated

      C. hateful D. hurt

      1. A。 Holidaymakers who are bored with baking beaches and overheated hotel rooms head for a big igloo.

In two weeks time Bergqvists ice creation will be nothing more than a pool of water 是對 soon the fun will be over 的詮釋。

After their stay, all visitors receive a survival certificate recording their success.(所有的來訪者在離開之前都可得到一張記載他們在此生存成功的證書)。

      2. A。 There is nothing personal here(在這里,沒有任何個人的東西)。

      3. C。 One of these was: you couldnt accept tips. 故應選 C。

      4. D。 It gets to a point where you almost have to hurt a person physically to prevent him from tipping you,故應選 D。
