On June 1st, 2018, Danzishi Old Street in Landmark Riverside, Chongqing, was formally opened to the public.
The Old Street is located on Nanbin Road. The street is built on slopes, stretching one kilometer upwards and covering an area of 40,000 square meters.
Nearly a hundred years have passed and the Old Street still stands here, connecting the past and the future. It is the only district in the country that combines nearly 100 years of port opening history with the cultural landscape of a modern city. Here, the ancient stilted Buildings collide with modern ones and blend with each other. The reborn Old Street with a hundred years of history appears in front of the public with a brand-new appearance.
The Old Street preserves the unique style of stilt buildings in Chongqing. It used woody elements to combine courtyards,terraced-houses and greenery. In addition, it not only used the traditional Chongqing construction methods, including the construction of viewing platforms and overhangs, but also reproduced the wood carvings, brick carvings, stone carvings and other art forms of the period of opening to the outside world when Chongqing first became a trading port.
There are many ports and attractions. From the Stone which used to be a sign of Chongqing Customs to Baisui Memorial Archway, a scenic spot is built every kilometer away, forming a pattern of “ten spots on a road of ten kilometers long”. Walking slowly along the stairs, strolling on the streets and lanes, and traveling in the courtyards, the memory of Chongqing’s past suddenly emerged.
In the middle of the old street, the Chinese traditional grey tiles and bricks are in harmony with European arched doors and street lamps. The sense of history and internationality coexist in the Old Street. Looking at the Old Street from a distance, you can see the unique scene of the convergence of the Yangtze River and the Jialing River. At the back of the Old Street, following the 80-meter-high stone staircase, and you will see a variety of shopping stores, restaurants and coffee shops.
