英國(guó)報(bào)紙的變遷

BRITISH newspapers are among the oldest and most famous in the world. But recently big changes have seen these traditional publications try to fit the modern world. After over 200 years， The Times has halved its size to become much smaller. In fact， the paper has cut its size in half from a broadsheet to tabloid.

英國(guó)報(bào)業(yè)歷史悠久，世界聞名。近年來，英國(guó)一些傳統(tǒng)報(bào)紙進(jìn)行了較大改革，以適應(yīng)不斷變化的現(xiàn)代社會(huì)。其中，擁有200多年悠久歷史的《泰晤士報(bào)》把版面縮小了一半，將大報(bào)版面轉(zhuǎn)為小報(bào)版面。

In Britain the newspaper market is divided between the larger broadsheets and the smaller tabloids. These terms refer to the size of the papers pages but there is also a clear difference in content. Broadsheets such as The Times， the Guardian and Daily Telegraph are serious papers. They cover a broad range of political， economic and international issues. Their stories are also reasonably long and use quite formal language.

在英國(guó)，報(bào)紙有兩種類型：大版面嚴(yán)肅性報(bào)紙和小版面小報(bào)。這兩種類型的報(bào)紙不僅版面大小不同，而且內(nèi)容也大相徑庭。《泰晤士報(bào)》《衛(wèi)報(bào)》《每日電訊報(bào)》等報(bào)紙為大版面嚴(yán)肅性報(bào)紙，它們報(bào)道的內(nèi)容廣泛，涵蓋政治、經(jīng)濟(jì)、國(guó)際事務(wù)等方面。文章相對(duì)更長(zhǎng)，用語正式。

Tabloids have far more stories about less serious issues such as celebrities love lives. Their stories are shorter and use more simple language. Tabloids often have bigger pictures. Britains best-selling newspaper， the Sun， is a tabloid and has a naked girl on page three every day.

而小報(bào)的文章數(shù)量更多，都是關(guān)于一些不太嚴(yán)肅的話題，如名人的戀情等。文章篇幅更短，語言簡(jiǎn)練，經(jīng)常選用大幅圖片。英國(guó)最暢銷的《太陽報(bào)》就是一份小報(bào)。該報(bào)每天都會(huì)在第三版刊登一張裸體女郎的圖片。

By changing to the size of a tabloid， The Times is following in the footsteps of a less famous broadsheet paper the Independent. It changed to tabloid several years ago and saw its sales increase greatly. Although both papers have switched to the smaller size， the content of the papers has remained the same. They are both still serious papers.

《泰晤士報(bào)》是繼《獨(dú)立報(bào)》之后采用小報(bào)版面的。盡管《獨(dú)立報(bào)》的名氣沒有《泰晤士報(bào)》大，但幾年前由大報(bào)版面改為小報(bào)版面使其銷量大增?，F(xiàn)在這兩份報(bào)紙都采用小報(bào)版面，但內(nèi)容沒有發(fā)生變化，仍是嚴(yán)肅性的報(bào)紙。

The two papers claim that people find the smaller size easier to handle when they travel to work on the bus or the train in the morning. The Times says its new size is “compact”， not tabloid.

這兩份報(bào)紙解釋說，早上乘巴士或火車去上班時(shí)，小版面報(bào)紙便于攜帶。《泰晤士報(bào)》稱改版后的報(bào)紙為“緊湊型”，并沒有淪為街頭小報(bào)。
