Chen Yan, a vocal music teacher in the Art College of Chongqing University, has performed a large number of Chinese and foreign vocal music works after years of intensive study and hard training, and is quite accomplished in the aspect of opera. 7 solo concerts have been held successfully, and the one when she was a visiting scholar at the University of Missouri won great praise for her solo concert in 2010. She sang 16 Chinese and foreign art songs and opera arias in German, French, Italian and English, as well as in her mother tongue Chinese. In the same year, Chen Yan was invited to accompany the Missouri Wind Orchestra to perform in Beijing Concert Hall, Chengdu Jiaozi Concert Hall and other 6 city tours as solo singer. On Teacher's Day 2017, she won high praise for the performances at her solo concert "Song of September" at Chongqing Guotai Arts Center.
The concert was the first proved performance for public benefits performed by university teachers in municipal theater of Chongqing in 2018. "It's a great honor for me to be here. The number of people applying for admission to the show has doubled that of the audience seats." Before the performance, Chen Yan told reporters that performing a solo concert was a test of singing skills, and no one could be perfect. "But as a vocal music teacher, I should set a good example for students, put my singing performance on the stage, and accept the evaluation of vocal music peers and the audience. The more evaluation I get, the more improvement and progress I gain." Chen Yan often encourages students to take the stage to gain courage.
The day of the performance was the 89th anniversary of Chongqing University. Chen Yan told reporters that the performance was to show thanks to the community and the people and as a gift to the 89th anniversary celebration of Chongqing University. For this anniversary, she specially added the "Anthem of Chongqing University" in the singing performed all by her students. "In order to perform the anthem, two of my graduates came here all the way from Guangzhou. I was deeply touched." Chen Yan was very gratified.
"Let the distant mountains draw my eyebrows and let the water comb my hair. The daughter in the war is still so beautiful... " "The Everlasting Blossom Age" is selected from the opera "Old City Fight in Wild Fire and Spring Winds", and it was also the theme song of the concert. Chen Yan said, "I particularly like the song that expresses the revolutionaries' vigorous struggle spirit, which is worth passing on and carrying forward for our generation." The most profound impression that Chen Yan's singing left on people is her rich artistic expression and appeal, her clear, pure, sweet, excellent timbre and superb singing skills in the Chinese and foreign vocal music works that were performed with ease and skill.

Chen Yan’s sound-of-heaven voice, pure heart and unique idea of art have attracted groups of students who love music to come to her class. Chen Yan believes that music and art can let children gain the nurture of life, and the power of art can produce physical and mental softening and surrounding, which is a gentle force. In her opinion, standing on the teaching platform is as important as sticking to the singing stage. Learning while teaching and studying while performing are both important ways to carry forward the spirit of patriotic struggle in the new era. She sings out her love for the motherland and records the pace of a vocal music teacher's achievements in the new era with her diligent singing.

In this performance, Chen Yan brought the audience 13 classical opera arias, including "Paean of Red Plum", "Ode to the Coral", "My Love Will Be with You Forever", "Love God Please Comfort Me", "My Dear Father" and other popular Chinese and foreign classic opera arias.
At the concert that evening, many audiences were parents of vocal music learners and many were music lovers. They said that they thought opera was a Western form of music. But now they can enjoy the performance of local musicians at home, including some excellent repertoire of traditional Chinese operas, making them feel very good while enjoying the music feast.
Opera is a drama that expresses the story mainly by singing and music. It originated in the West with a history of several hundred years, leaving a lot of classical repertoire and longlasting aria. Chen Yan introduced that the theme of the Chinese opera she chose for the performance was positive, with the eulogy for women revolutionary fighters as the main line. Each opera reflected touching stories with profound ideological connotations, firm revolutionary beliefs, deep friendship and rich humanistic feelings rooted in the people. And the beautiful melody was refreshing. Performances such as "Jiang Jie" and"Daughter of the Party" were great to watch, to listen to and of educational value.
Chen Yan was once asked, "don't you worry that there may be no spectators in the concert?" "I had such concerns before, but I changed my mind when I was a visiting scholar in the United States in 2010," she said. During her visit to the graduate faculty of the University of Missouri, Chen Yan watched more than 100 concerts of all scales. Some of them were crowded, while others had only a small audience. But the artists would still do their best. “I asked them why, and they said that as long as they did it,the result was not important.”
One of Chen Yan's most impressive experiences during her stay in the United States was a tap dance performance in a very influential theatre in the University of Missouri. On the first day,the performance was facing ordinary citizens at a price of $35 per ticket. The second day was special for pupil at a price of only $5. Both performances were crowded with audience, which made Chen Yan deeply touched. She believed that artists and university professors must have a sense of social responsibility to arouse people to enter the theatre, enable art to approach the public, and transmit positive music energy to more people.
