Winters in Canada are no joke.
They are brutal19 and sometimes deadly. Every year, more than 80 deaths are caused by the cold in Canada. In fact, the village of Snag in Yukon recorded the lowest temperature ever in Canada and North America:-63°C. The record for the greatest single-day snowfall in Canada was in Tahtsa Lake, B.C.:145 centimeters of snow on Feb. 11, 1999.
Canadians keep warm in winter by dressing appropriately20. Winter boots, hats, gloves, scarves and coats are a must. For extreme cold, snow pants and face coverings (ski masks) may be worn. Cars often have engine heaters in them, which use electricity to keep the car from“freezing”. This helps the engine start more easily, especially when it goes below -20°C.
Winter in Canada may be chilly21, but there is still plenty to do. It is true that cold winters are in most parts of Canada, so Canadians embrace22 them and make winters fun. Some of the more popular winter activities include downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice skating.
Many people visit Canada in the winter specifically because of these activities. Not all of Canada is freezing cold in the winter. Western Canada, including Vancouver and Victoria have moderate(溫和的)climates and little snow.
Fortunately, most of the Canadian population live close to the American border(邊界)and not in the frozen zone. But still, Canadians seem to have a higher tolerance23 for cold than anyone else. Often, when the world is all bundled up(捆綁起來)in winter time, Canadians can still go around in shorts thinking“its not that cold today”.
