老外在中國：關掉電視，暢游書海

馬特·普瑞查德是一名資深編輯，也是《中國日報》頭版專欄成員。他在中國定居4年多了。在來中國之前，他在美國和拉丁美洲從事了30余年的記者和編輯工作。他酷愛閱讀，覺得書遠比電影和智能手機有意思。來看看他怎么說。

One of the many good things I have experienced since I moved to1 China has been an increased interest in reading. With my favorite television programs harder to reach， I turned to the electronic pages of an e-reader2.

Since I was eager3 to learn all about my new environment， I looked to Chinese and foreign authors. I had read a book by the early revolutionary leader Sun Yat-sen（孫中山）when I was about 12， long before I ever imagined living in China.

One of my early favorites when I arrived in China was an American writer and journalist4， Peter Hessler， who took the name of He Wei（何偉）in China. His book， River Town， about his introduction to China in 1996 as an English teacher in Chongqing — is an excellent book for newcomers. His descriptions of day-to-day life are insightful5， and he captures（捕捉） an interesting point in time as China opened its international borders.

Beijing has some very nice movie theaters， and I enjoy videos on DVD and Youku.com. But movies cant compare with pictures that master writers have engraved（銘記） upon your mind. You can go as fast as you want or slow down and enjoy a scene6.

I have heard that reading has been declining7 as electronic devices8， such as smart phones and video games， have become available9 everywhere. But my hope is that young people dont lose the pleasure of reading.

我搬到中國后，感受到的眾多好處之一便是我對閱讀的興趣大增。由于自己喜歡的電視節(jié)目需要大費周章才能收看，我便轉向閱讀電子書。

我渴望了解生活的新環(huán)境，由此開始閱讀中、外作家的作品。早在12歲時，我就讀過革命先驅孫中山的傳記，但那時我從沒想過會在這里生活。

彼得·赫斯勒是我到中國后最先喜歡的一位作家，他在中國叫何偉。赫斯勒來自美國，也是一名記者。他的《江城》對初來乍到的外國人來說，是一本極好的入門書。這本書是關于1996年他在重慶當英語老師時對中國的認識。他對日常生活的描述有深刻見解，在中國對外開放之際，及時捕捉到了一個有趣的視角。

北京有一些不錯的電影院，有時我也會用DVD或者在“優(yōu)酷”觀看視頻。但與文學大師在你腦海中描繪的畫面相比，電影通常是蒼白無力的。閱讀，你盡可匆匆掠過，也可放慢速度，細細品讀某個場景。

我聽說，隨著智能手機、電子游戲等電子設備的盛行，人們的閱讀時間一直在減少。但我希望年輕人不要失去閱讀的樂趣。
