Huang Zhidong's room is like a small museum.The treasures there are not things he's collected,but models of miniature dragon heads that he's made himself over the years.

The 16-year-old,who studies at the Dongguan Science Technology School in Guangdong Province,is a big fan of making miniature models of dragon heads,a traditional art form in his hometown.

Huang became interested in dragons at a young age.Every timethe dragon boat race was held in his hometown,he showed great interest and stopped to watch it.He gradually noticed that every dragon head at the front of the dragon boats had a special color and expression.Soon,the boy started to draw dragon heads on paper in kindergarten and sculpted them out of wood by fifth grade.

The process was more difficult than he thought it would be,sincethe models can be as small as fist.“Draw a picture,print it on the wood，sculpt,polish,paint,color...It involves almost 10 steps,”Huang said.He sometimesspendsseven hours a daysculptingdragon heads.

Huang has eventurnedhis hobbyintoa business and often shares his works on WeChat.At 13,Huang got his first order of four dragon heads after posting pictures online,whichtook himtwo weekstofinish.The praise he got from his customer encouraged him to sell more.He has gotten many more orders since then.

Now,the high school student is trying to improve his technique—he is sculpting with different types of wood and studying the works of master sculptors.“I wish I could have the spirit of the craftsman and improve my skills to make handicrafts more delicate.”
