Brother Tian/Uncle Tian!
Joan:This month, I’m going to talk about an old friend, tracing back to the 1990s when I was a student in New York! One of the early experiences at the Metropolitan Opera was Tian Haojiang’s appearance in Franco Zeffirelli’sTurandotas Timur.
Valery:On that note, we should also pay tribute to the great Zeffirelli, who died last month.Tian, though,is still an active bass-baritone on the international stage, having performed in Tang Jianping’sVoyage to the Eastin Los Angeles and New York in mid-June.
Joan:Indeed, Tian’s operatic life has been truly international.I also remember he was among the first stars to return to China when Western opera became more established.
Valery:Actually, we must also credit him for starring in new operas.Apart from the recentVoyage to the East, I remember him inPoet Li Baifrom 2007.
Joan:He not only played the title role in the world premiere, but actually spearheaded the opera’s creation.Guo Wenjing’s 90-minute one-act had its world premiere in Central City Opera, in the Colorado mountains. To bringPoet Li Baiback to China was no small feat then (remember, that was before the National Centre for the Performing Arts opened!).

Valery:Many of young singers in China and abroad are also indebted to him and his wife Dr.Martha Liao for organizing the “I Sing!” program, which is now based in Suzhou.
Joan:This couple’s wonderful hospitality has provided many young singers with a spiritual and artistic home. Many times I’ve been lucky to be included in their grand soirees.
Valery:I’ve been checking the operatic calendar and see that Mr.Tian is in Berlin in early July, performing in yet another Chinese opera making its way to the West: Tang Jianping’sThe Diaries of John Rabe(also known as170 Days in Nanking).
Joan:A couple of months ago he was in Hong Kong playing the Commendatore inDon Giovanni. It’s very hectic singing repertory opera and championing original Chinese works, so I must tip my hat to Mr.Tian.The Diaries of John Rabeappears in Berlin,Hamburg and Vienna this month, with Tian playing John Magee, one of the heroes of the Nanking International Rescue Committee.
Valery:And he’ll be back in Suzhou by the end of July for “I Sing!”
Joan:It’s a busy—but wonderfully varied—life!.
