The first Tricycle Theatre opened in 1980, housed in the Forester’s Hall, in Kilburn, north London.Working within a limited budget and timescale, the auditorium was constructed inside the old Hall with a brightly coloured scaffolding system, timber floor decks and canvas gallery fronts being used to create one of London’s first contemporary courtyard-style theatres.

In 1987, the auditorium was almost totally destroyed by a fire (started in a neighboring timber yard). The theatre reopened two years later with the original theatre structure rebuilt within a new outer shell, with improved front of house, rehearsal and production facilities. In 1998, funding from the National Lottery enabled further improvements to be made and a cinema and rehearsal room to be added on adjoining land. The Tricycle now comprises a 230-seat theatre; a 300-seat cinema; a large rehearsal studio; a visual arts studio for educational use and a smaller theatre/workshop space; as well as a café/bar, art gallery and the ‘Creative Space’ for community/participatory activities (added in 2001).

The design of the auditorium with its easy audience/performer contact and the relaxed,informal style of the building as a whole serve the theatre company well. The dimensions and form of the auditorium are closely modeled on the Georgian Theatre in Richmond, Yorkshire (built in 1788), demonstrating that traditional formats can be successfully adapted to use modern construction techniques and to meet current theatrical needs.
