      閱讀理解

As a child, I was really afraid of the dark and of getting lost. These fears were very real and caused me some uncomfortable moments.

Maybe it was the strange way things looked and sounded in my own room at night that scared me so much. There was never complete darkness, but always a streetlight or passing car lights, which made clothes on the back of a chair take on the shape of a wild animal. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the curtains (窗簾) seem to move when there was no wind. A very low sound on the floor would seem a hundred times louder than that in the day. My imagination would run wild, and my heart would beat fast. I would lie very still so that the “enemy” would not discover me.

Another of my childhood fears was that I would get lost, especially on the way home from school. Every morning I got on the school bus right near my home. That was no problem. After school, though, when all the buses were lined up along the street, I was afraid that I would get in the wrong one and be taken to some strange places. On school or family trips to a park or a museum, I wouldnt let the leaders out of my sight.

Perhaps one of the worst fears of all I had as a child was that of not being liked or accepted by others. Being popular was so important to me then, and the fear of not being liked was a serious one.

One of the processes of growing up is being able to realize and overcome our fears. Understanding the things that scared us as children helps us achieve greater success later in life.

Hawaii has always been a magic name to people who like travelling. People from all over the world dream of seeing the beautiful islands in the middle of the ocean. Its always one of their dreams to watch the sun going down. The sun drops like a ball of bright fire into the sea, and it drops so quickly that you can even see it move.

About two thousand years ago, the first people went to Hawaii in a very small boat. They found the beautiful white sand beaches and the waving palm trees (棕櫚樹). But it was difficult for people to go to Hawaii at that time. And there were no big hotels like the ones today. Now people can get to Hawaii in different ways. More and more people go to Hawaii. So lots of nice big hotels have been built in recent years.

However, the scenery (風景) in Hawaii hasnt changed much. The white sand beaches and the waving palm trees are still there.

People often have a peaceful time, taking a walk along the water in the morning. At night, they get together to hold parties, chatting and dancing. So if youre thinking about relaxing yourself, Hawaii is surely the first place to choose.

      閱讀表達

It was Saturday again. Grace and Karen disliked Saturdays. That was another thing the twins had in common. They shared the same clothes and tied their hair in the same manner. In fact, it was hard for their classmates and teachers to tell the difference between them sometimes.

Unlike their classmates, they had to get up early at seven every Saturday to prepare for their lessons. Grace had to attend the art lesson and Karen had to attend her ballet lesson. “How I wish I could do something different today,” said the twins with one voice. All at once, an idea came to Grace and Karen at the same time. “What about exchanging our roles for a day?” they asked each other. It seemed like a wonderful plan. After giving each other a description of their own friends, Grace put on Karens ballet dress while Karen put Graces brushes and paints into her bag. Then they left for their classes.

When the art lesson started, Karen was lost. Unlike Grace, Karen was poor at drawing. When the art lesson finally ended, Karen didnt dare to hand in her work.

Meanwhile (與此同時), Grace had problems in the ballet class as well. As she had no idea about the dance steps, she had to follow her classmates blindly. As a result, she kept knocking into them. Their ballet teacher became impatient with her, “Karen, you should remember the basic steps.”

When Karen and Grace got home, they were tired out. They decided that they would never try to be someone else they were not. It seemed that the grass was not always greener on the other side.

      1. When did the twins get up on Saturdays?

      2. What was the twins plan when they decided to do something different?

      3. What do you think of Karens art work?

      4. Why did the ballet teacher become impatient with Grace?

      5. How did the twins feel when they got home finally?
