When I was growing up in America, I was ashamed of my mothers Chinese English. Because of her English, she was often treated unfairly. People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, and pretended (假裝) not to understand her.
My mother has realized the disadvantages of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on the phone to pretend I was she. I was forced to ask for information or even to shout at people who had been rude to her. One time I had to call her stockbroker (股票經(jīng)紀(jì)人). I said in an adolescent voice that was not very believable, “This is Mrs Tan.”
And my mother was standing beside me, whispering loudly, “Why he doesnt send me check already two week long.”
And then, in perfect English I said, “Im getting rather worried. You agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasnt arrived.”
Then she talked more loudly, “What he want? I come to New York tell him front of his boss.” And so I turned to the stockbroker again, “I cant tolerate (容忍) any more excuse. If I dont receive the check immediately, I am going to have to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week.”
The next week we ended up in New York. While I was sitting there red-faced, my mother, the real Mrs Tan, was shouting to the boss in her broken English.
When I was a teenager, my mothers broken English embarrassed me. But now, I see it differently. To me, my mothers English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother tongue. It was the language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed ideas, and made sense of the world.

Some people think only school children do not agree with their parents. However, it is not true.
1 If its hard for you to communicate with your parents, dont worry about it. Here is some advice for you to bridge the generation gap.
Dont argue with your parents. Dont get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents possibly wont consider your ideas if you are shouting at them.? 2 Go someplace to cool off.
3 Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each others. Michaels mother didnt agree with him about buying a motorcycle. They argued over it. But they finally came to a compromise (折中). Michael bought the motorcycle, but only drove it on certain days.
Of course, your parents might refuse to compromise on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect for them. 4
Talk about your values. The values of your parents are probably different from those of your own. 5 Understanding your values might help them see your purposes in life. A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It is worth having a try.
A. Try to reach a compromise.
B. Tell your parents what you care about, and why.
C. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy.
D. Showing respect will keep your relationship strong.
E. And you cant express yourself well if you are angry.
F. Communication is a problem for parents and children of all ages.

It was Sunday, so Dad and I were at the second-hand goods market, looking for tools, appliances (家用電器), and other things that needed cleaning. Some were broken; others, like silver cups, just needed to be cleaned and polished. Dad worked full-time at a factory, but the money wasnt enough. Dad had tried a second job for a while, but he found it was too hard on the family. One day, he had an excellent idea that set me on a lifelong course of making money to support myself. Standing beside a crowded table at the second-hand goods market, I looked over an ancient manual sewing machine (縫紉機(jī)). Someone had changed it to run on electric power. It was much older than Moms machine, but it looked like it had quality and a long life built into it. “Dad!” I called. “This is a beauty!” “What have you got, Son?” I described what I saw and what I figured I could do to fix the beauty up. Dad paid for my discovery, and we headed home.
Every day after school I worked on the ancient machine, and every night Dad and I sharpened tools and knives, polished metal, and replaced missing parts from various items (物品). The next Sunday we headed off, as we did every weekend, to that same market, where we sold the treasures wed bought the week before—at a tidy profit. My antique beauty brought in more money than anything else, and Dad let me keep it.
Dad has gone now, but I can never thank him enough. Even if we hadnt needed the extra money Dad and I brought in, I wouldnt have traded those weekends for all the picnics or Little League games in St. Louis—not in a million years.
1. What does the underlined part “an excellent idea” refer to?
A. Getting a second job for a while. B. Having his son get an after-school job.

Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. Im not going to say luck and talent; circumstances dont come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and thats just the reality of how life is.
However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical (切實(shí)可行). And, in addition to that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practicing. To become great at certain things, itll require even more time, time that most people wont put in.
This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you dont enjoy what you do, it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit (放棄) well before you ever become good at it.
When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. Its sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and theres a huge chance that you are wrong anyway.
Whatever you do, if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time. If youre not willing to put in the time and work, dont expect to receive any rewards. Consistent hard work wont ensure you the level of success you may want, but it will ensure that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into.
5. What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?
A. The meaning of success. B. The reasons for success.
C. The standards of success. D. The importance of success.
6. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Setting a practical goal. B. Being good at something.
C. Putting in more time. D. Succeeding in life.
7. Why do successful people suggest doing what one loves?
A. It makes one happy. B. One can have better chances to succeed.
C. One gives up his work easily. D. It takes a lot of time to succeed.
8. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A. Successful people have great skills. B. Its hard to achieve success.
C. Luck or talent leads to success. D. People sometimes succeed without luck or talent.

As I was cleaning up my bookshelf this weekend, I found a lot of cards from my mother. When I read the words on each card, I ended up crying. Thats because these encouraging cards helped me go through a difficult time. I felt pressured at the beginning of high school and was afraid of falling behind. Mom found my problem and encouraged me as much as she could by using these cards. Gradually, I became less nervous and began to find pleasure in my studies. Mom makes me understand that pressure cant be avoided. We should deal with it properly, and turn it into pleasure or a challenge.
