How to Learn English
Dear younger sisters and brothers,
As we all know, English is used very widely in the world. How can we learn it well? Here are my suggestions.
First, we should often listen to tapes, English songs and programs. Watching English movies is also helpful to us. Second, we should speak English in class as much as possible. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. The more you speak, the fewer mistakes you’ll make. We’d better join the English club and practice with others. Third, we can read more English newspapers and magazines. It’s good for us. At last, we should remember some good passages and keep diaries.

Dear Jim,
How are you? I’m really glad that you are interested in Chinese traditional festivals. I’d like to introduce the Spring Festival to you.
The Spring Festival is one of the most important festivals in China. It is a time for family reunion and it usually comes in January or February. People get together to have a big dinner, give best wishes to each other and set off fireworks. Children receive lucky money from elders. I like the Spring Festival because during this festival, I can wear new clothes, eat delicious food and have fun with friends.
Can you tell me something about your favorite festival?

I’m in Grade Nine now. And my life has changed a lot. My daily life is quite different. For example, I used to get up at 6:30 am, but now I have to get up at six to read English. Now I have little time to play. Everything I can do now is for my tests. I hope this kind of life could be changed.

My Opinions on Family Rules
My parents are very strict. I have so many family rules. For example, I can’t go out with my friends at school nights. And I must finish my homework on time. I can’t play computer games. I have to get up at six o’clock every morning and I have to be in bed by ten o’clock. Besides, I have to exercise at least three times a week.
Thanks to these rules, I can keep healthy. But I think playing some computer games is not bad. So I think my parents should make some changes to the family rules.

Dear Editor,
I am a Grade 9 student. Recently we made a survey—“To whom do you go when in trouble?” Here are the results.
Most students will go to their classmates or friends when they have trouble because they are almost of the same age. They can talk with and understand each other easily. Some will tell their teachers or parents about their problems as they have rich experience and they are helpful. Only a few solve their problems by themselves. They hate to talk with others and can’t get on well with other people, either. They have few friends.
I think we’d better ask our teachers, parents, classmates and friends for help when we are in trouble.
Yours sincerely,
Wang Ping

How to Spend Our Time Properly
Where has our time gone? How should we spend our time properly?
Study is important to us students, so we should make a" daily plan. Most of all, we should listen carefully in class. For homework, we need to make a list and work out how much time we need, and then finish them one by one. Hobbies are also important in our lives, which can make us happy and confident. But don’t spend too much time on them. We should achieve a balance between our study and hobbies.
We need to spend time properly in other ways like talking with our friends at lunchtime and watching TV at weekends.
In this way, I’m sure we will live a happier school life.

How to Behave Well
As middle school students we should pay attention to our behavior.
First, I think it’s very important to do everything on time and keep promises. Never lie to others or say dirty words. Only in this way will people trust you. Next, we should be polite to others and ready to help people in need. Then, we’d better not talk loudly in public. Don’t throw litter about and remember to obey traffic rules for our safety. Finally, we should learn to work well with others. We need good teamwork in our life to study better.

My Favorite Movie
My name is Li Hua. I like movies very much. I think a good movie can teach us about life, or explain what the meaning of life is, what real friendship is and so on. Zootopia is one of my favorite movies. It is a cartoon movie. The story is about a rabbit that joins the police and solves a difficult case with a fox. I like the movie because it teaches me to stick to my dream and then to achieve it. “If you don’t try anything new, you’ll never fail.” These words from the movie have influenced me a lot. What’s more, the theme song of the movie, Try Everything, is a great song. I like listening to it.

I had a bad day yesterday. I forgot to set my alarm clock the night before, so I got up very late. I looked out of the window, and it was raining cats and dogs. It took me longer to get to school. I ran to the school gate, but it was closed completely. I was still late for school at last.

Dear Mr Green,
I’d like to invite you to come to Red Star Community to take part in environmental protection activities. We are going to start at 9 o’clock this Sunday morning. We are going to collect paper, plastic bags, empty bottles around the community and put them into different trash bins. That will help the cleaners to recycle the waste things easily. We also plan to recycle some books and clothes and give them to the people in need. We’d like you to take some photos for us and write a report in your newspaper. We believe more and more people will do a bit for recycling in our daily life.
We look forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Challenge Myself
When I first went to junior high school, I couldn’t understand my English teacher because she only spoke English in class. I was worried and didn’t know what to do. My teacher encouraged me and gave me lots of helpful advice.
First of all, I listened to the tapes and read English aloud every morning, which helped to improve my pronunciation. Second, I improved my listening by watching English movies. In this way, I not only practiced listening but also had fun. Day by day, I could follow my teacher in class and I really enjoy my English class now.
Through the experience, I have realized that as long as we keep trying, nothing is impossible.
