About 1966 or so, a NASA (美國航空航天局) team doing work for the Apollo moon mission took the astronauts near Tuba City. There the landscape of the Navajo Reservation (保留地) looks very much like the lunar surface. Among all the trucks and large vehicles were two large figures that were dressed in full lunar space suits.

Nearby a Navajo shepherd (牧羊人) and his son were watching the strange creatures walk about, occasionally being watched over by other NASA workers. The two Navajo people were noticed and approached by the NASA people. Since the shepherd and his son did not know English, they asked the NASA people who the strange creatures were. The NASA people told them that they were just men that were getting ready to go to the moon. The shepherd became very excited and asked if he could send a message to the moon with the astronauts.

The NASA officials thought this was a great idea so they provided a tape recorder. After the man gave them his message, they asked his son to translate. His son would not.

Later, they tried a few more people on the reservation to translate and every person they asked would chuckle (偷偷地笑) and then refuse to translate. Finally, with cash in hand someone translated the message.

“Watch out for these guys, they have come to take your land!”

      60. The appearance of the Navajo Reservation is very similar to that of _________.

      C. his father was sending a warning against the NASA people

      D. he believed that the NASA workers could understand their language

      63. According to this passage, we can know that the shepherd was _________.

      A. patient and brave

      B. foolish and impolite

      C. humorous and intelligent

      D. knowledgeable and talkative

      Not just for people

Like people, animals also take time out to rest. Youve probably seen a lion dozing at the zoo, or maybe watched your dog snooze (打盹兒) away in its bed. In fact, sleep is a necessity for every animal. This includes whales, eagles and even fruit flies (果蠅).__How long an animal sleeps, though, varies widely. Elephants sleep only 2 to 4 hours a day, while bats may nod off for up to 20 hours. By studying similarities and differences in when and how long different animals sleep, researchers hope to better understand why the need for rest is important to all animals.

      What is sleep?

Scientists know that our body changes between two types of sleep during the night.

In the first type, brain activity slows as the body enters a deep sleep. In the second type, known as rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep, our eyes move quickly under their lids and our brains become almost as active as they are when were awake. This period is also when we dream.

Unlike reptiles (爬行類), amphibians (兩棲動物), and fish, all land mammals (哺乳動物) and birds experience this type of resting.

“REM sleep is quite a mystery,”said Jerome Siegel, who studies animals sleep at the University of California, Los Angeles. Researchers dont know why people or any other animals do it.

One thing REM-sleeping animals have in common is that theyre all relatively intelligent. Researchers wonder if the need for REM sleep, with its busy brain activity, has something to do with that.

      Strange sleep

While some animals, like dolphins and whales, have no REM sleep, they keep some strange sleeping habits. When they sleep, just half of their brain sleeps and only one eye closes at a time. Keeping partly alert may be one way these animals protect themselves in the open ocean. Siegel says:“They have no safe place to sleep.”

Ducks do something similar. When sleeping together, the birds on the edge of the group sleep with the outside eye open and half of their brain awake—maybe to keep watch while the other half of their brain rests.

The fact that all animals make time for sleeping, even under potentially dangerous circumstances, suggests that sleep must serve a crucial function.

      64. What does the text focus on?

      A. The function of sleep.

      WELCOME TO CELS

The Certificates in English Languages Skills(CELS) are a set of modular tests that allow you to test in one or more of the four languages skills, or combine tests at different levels.

Farmer Ed Rawlings smiles as he looks at his orange trees. The young oranges are growing well in Floridas weather. Warm sunshine and gentle rains, along with Eds Rawlings expert care, will produce a good crop of oranges this year.

But Ed has to fight against Floridas changeable winter weather. In January and February, temperatures can destroy Eds entire orange crop. Having farmed in Florida for the past 35 years, Ed Rawlings is prepared for the frosts. When temperatures drop below freezing, Ed tries to save his drop by watering his orange trees. The water freezes and forms a thin layer of ice on the trees. Strange as it may sound, this thin layer of ice actually keeps the fruit warm.

What happens is simple. When the trees are watered, the water loses heat and becomes ice. The warmth of the heat it loses is sucked in by the fruit and keeps its temperature at a safe level. Ed Rawlings has effectively used this method to save many orange crops.

But Ed still faces some difficulties. The trees should be watered at the exact moment when the temperatures drop to the freezing point. Also, just the right quantity of water must be used. Too much water can form a thick layer of ice that will break the treesbranches. Another difficulty is that wind blows away the heat. So Ed has to worry about not only when but also how often his trees should be watered, and how much water should be used.

Computer technology may help Ed Rawlings with some of these worries. With equipment, air and soil temperatures and wind speed can be measured. The information is fed into a computer which can tell when temperatures drop to freezing. The computer can correctly decide the quantity of water to be used and how frequently the trees should be watered. Ed Rawlings will find looking after his orange trees a lot easier with the help of a computer, and well have the benefits (or advantages) of computer-age oranges.

      72. The passage is mainly about________.

      A. a farmers expert care for his orange trees

      B. the different uses of computers

C.growing oranges in Floridas changeable weather

      D. different ways of frost protection

      73. Ed tries to protect his crop by________.

      B. equipping his orange trees with a computer

      C. watering it at the proper time

      D. picking his fruit at the first sign of frost

      74. Which of the following is not necessary for Ed Rawlings to do?

      A. He should water the orange trees as soon as the temperatures drop to the freezing point.

      B. He should decide the quantity of water for the orange trees.

      C. He has to water the orange trees more often in January and February.

      D. He has to judge how often he should water the orange trees.

      75. According to the passage, the computer technology can________.

      A. get rid of the need for frost protectin

      B. help the farmer get a better harvest

      C. tell the farmer why outdoor temperature changes

      D. prevent the temperature from dropping to the freezing point
