The porcelain god[瓷神,比喻廁所] finally gets its altar[祭壇] at South Koreas Haewoojae, loosely translated as “a place of sanctuary[避難所] where one can solve ones worries.” However, it is better known in English as the Toilet Culture Exhibit Hall and Theme Park.
The toilet park officially opened on July 4th, 2012. It started life as the vision of Sim Jae-duck, known as Mr. Toilet thanks to his efforts to improve the city toilets at the 2002 World Cup when he served as the mayor of Suwon City, South Korea, where the park is now located. He also helped found the World Toilet Association[協(xié)會], which is dedicated[致力] to improving sanitation[衛(wèi)生設(shè)施] around the world.
In 2007, Sim constructed the worlds first toilet-shaped house in Suwon City, in which he lived until his death in 2009. After he passed away, the house was converted[轉(zhuǎn)換] into a museum, documenting[用文件證明] the worlds water closet[廁所] culture through men and womens bathroom signs from around the globe, photographs of public toilets and information about the importance of sanitary[有關(guān)衛(wèi)生的] bathroom facilities[設(shè)備].
The museum was expanded into a theme park in 2012, complete with different styles of toilets, such as squat[蹲坐] toilets traditionally used in Korea, European chamber pots[夜壺] and historical urinals[小便池]. While visitors are welcome to pretend like theyre relieving themselves[解手](making for some fun photo opportunities), the park has its own set of modern bathrooms available[可用的] for the real thing. The park does not have traditional rides, but guests are encouraged to interact[互動] with the exhibits and various sculptures[雕塑].
The park opens from 10AM to 6PM daily, and is closed on Mondays. Admission[入場費(fèi)] is free, though the museum accepts donations[捐款] to continue its mission to improve toilet hygiene[衛(wèi)生] and education.
