      The Application of Victory—learning in Chunks in English Teaching in Vocational School

      Abstract:Many students are low in learning efficiency, and the traditional teaching methods can not adapt to the modern socitey. The method of victory-learning in chunks proposes a new learning stategy which is much more effective. This paper discusses the concrete proposals of victory-learning in chunks in English teaching.

      Many students pay a lot, but gain little in English study. The contemporary society have increasing demands to talents who master English. Many students want to free themselves from the heavy burden, both them and the teachers are looking for efficient methods to learn and to teach English.

      The method of victory-learning in chunks is created by the professor Bao Jiping in Jiangsu Normal University. It applies to English teaching not only in primary and secondary schools but also in vocational schools. It proposes a new learning stategy that is to require students hold the thought--“in learning make your great objective victory, not lengthy compaigns”.This thought is based on Military Science of Sun Zi. It is proposed according to the characteristics of the knowledge explosion and the modern information revolution, and the needs of life-long study. This thought avoids teaching waste and damage, solves the problems of low-efficiency in teaching, and it is sustainable, intelligent and efficient.

      In our daily teaching, the most important is the efficient teaching and success, not just in the length of teaching time. There are too many examples that students who learn too hard and who can not stand academic stress finally fail in life. Students should plan their studying time reasonably, and learn with stategies. The victory-learning in chunks is the practical application of this thought.

      Learning is the key words in English teaching. Victory-learning in chunks meet the needs of interest, willingness, desire and determination of learners psychology and physiology, it brings the learners higher learning efficiency and plays an important role in English teaching. In traditional teaching and learning, many students fantasy to achieve good learning results without any scientic and specific plans. They are low in spirits, and many of them gain little after a long process of hard working, all of the phenomenon result from the backward learning methods. And Profeesor Baos victory-learning in chunks can provide a high-efficient learning method. We can apply the method in daily teaching from the following five aspects.

      First of all, the learning objectives should be made in chunks. Some students are blind in learning, some only study hard before the exams, then after the exam, they do not think, conclude and self-examine their shortages. Teacher can gudie the students to make different objectives such as daily obective, weekly ovjective, monthly objective, and then put them into effect. Only with the specific aims, can sutdents learning efficiency be improved.

      In addition, the learning content should be classified in chunks. We should divide the learning content into different chunks, and every chunk should be moderate in capacity, and degree of difficulty. Many students do not have the habit of organzing their learning content, they always study blindly witout any plan. So if the learning content is made in chunks, students can save a lot of time and cultivate their good habits. For example, students can put together the grammar points in different units, they can also categorize the words such as animals, countries, etc, so as to recite the words more conveniently.

      Besides, the learning time should be divided into chunks. Students often waste a lot of time in learning, they spend all day at school. They have no time to play, as a result some fail in the exam. The reason is that they didnt distribute the time reasonably. Teachers should requrie students to schedule their learning time scientifically. This can meet students different needs both in mental and in age. As the old saying goes: “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”The study and entertainment can help each other forward.

      Whats more, the difficult and important points should be categorized in chunks. For example, teachers can list the language points on the balckboard, students can visualize the important knowledge directly, then they will divide their time properly and learn effectively. As a result, both teachers and students can achieve economies of scale.

      Finally, the learning mood should be enhaced in chunks. Everyone, more or less, is affected by the mood. Active mood can arise students interest to improve the learning efficiency. We can adopt the following three methods: accelerated learning, quick competition, timely evaluation. For example we can ask students to learn certain content in limited time such as reciting a passage, then make a competition in groups or in the whole class. As soon as the hour is over, the teacher takes the examination. In this process, students are motivated fully and take part in the learing whole-heartedly.

      In conclusion, the victory-learning in chunks aims at knowledge, efficiency, competence, and will ultimately improve the teaching effect. I believe that scientific method will help everyone to fulfill their dream.
