Don’t Be Afraid to Change

3)Adaptability is the key to success in fast-changing markets.“When the wind is blowing, even a pig can fy,” Ma said, “but when the wind is gone, it falls to die. The pig hasn’t changed itself at all. You change yourself, and then you change the world.”

Have Fun

Tech titans Bill Gates注2, Mark Zuckerberg注3and Jerry Yang注4started their4)respective businesses while still in college. Ma twice failed college entrance exams. He said students can mix business with study—but only if they do it “just for fun.” There’s no5)shame if you discover you are not cut out to be an entrepreneur. After all,“There is only one Bill Gates and one Jerry Yang,” Ma said, “for college students, study is your key6)responsibility.”

Believe in Yourself

Ma talked with eight students who wanted to study at the business school he opened in Hangzhou注5. He was impressed by the students’7)breadth of knowledge and8)sophistication.“Young people today are much more9)capable than we were,” Ma said, “I feel lucky that I started my business 15 years ago. I would be defeated badly if I started today. All you need is to be confdent in yourself and your partners when others are against you.”
