“it was becoming cold and dark outside” tells us that “I” felt very sad and disappointed to know the bookstore was closing and “I” felt powerless to change that. It was the coldness in “my” heart that darkened “my” day and made the feeling stronger that the bookstore would disappear forever, together with “my” good, old memories.
“both he and his bookstore were already hidden in a thick mist”. In this sentence, a thick mist stands for the uncertainty of the bookstores future, which echoes “my” feeling that the bookstore might disappear forever.
But it is just a mist not darkness, why? I think it suggests that there may be a slim chance of it getting better, and it is closely connected with the following contents.

Ⅰ.
It was “we” that saved the Rainbow Bookstore. “We” are a group of the community residents, having an extraordinarily deep affection for the bookstore, where we read books, exchange ideas and connect each other. There were three overwhelming and strong qualities that contributed to the revival of the bookstore.
Being affectionate. All the residents have an extraordinary deep affection for the bookstore, with which they are highly motivated to help preserve and improve the bookstore.
Being cooperative. Having the same goal in mind, a group of residents cooperated with each other, and successfully transformed the old bookstore into a new and modern one. Cooperation must have played a very significant role in the process.
Being creative. The old bookstore was out of date and gradually lost its customers and glory. Instead of accepting the result, a group of residents chose to change it into a modern and fashionable one, using their creative ideas and deep love for it. The bookstore is very popular now, full of different activities, healthy food and stylish decoration. It is the combination of old memories and 21st century fashion elements. Without creativity, all of this would be impossible.
Ⅱ.
My new chapter
The title “A new chapter” has multiple meanings. It is a new chapter for the bookstore, because it is no longer what it used to be. With everyones joint efforts, the bookstore is a popular one combining its old characteristics and modern elements and it was built with love and creative ideas, making it the most special bookstore in the whole world. It is a new chapter for “I” because “I” must have come to realize that just feeling sad and being passive would never make a difference, and everything is possible if you have the determination to do it. It is a new chapter for Casey, because he must be aware of the importance of learning new things and keeping pace with the time. Although he doesnt take charge of the bookstore, he feels happy that the bookstore returns to its former glory and function. It is a new chapter for everyone in the community as well. In contemporary society, the Internet has reshaped peoples life. People tend to do almost everything on the Internet, including communication. The new bookstore provides a good place and reason for everyone to gather together and enjoy the real happiness of life, instead of shutting themselves at home separately.
The story sets me thinking a lot. As a student, I have an old?fashioned “bookstore” as well, which sells outdated learning methods, bad habits and stubbornness to change. So, I think its time for me to change my old bookstore into a brand?new one. Firstly, I need to regain my interest and love for my studies. So, trying to discover the charm and beauty of the subjects will be my first step. Secondly, changing my bad habits and trying to find a better and more efficient way to learn is of great necessity as well. In order to achieve that, I will turn to my teachers and classmates for advice and try to get rid of the outdated ideas and think out of the box whenever possible. By doing that, I have great confidence that my new bookstore will be as popular as the Rainbow Bookstore.
