On November 9, 2019, Chongqing Time City Creative Show opened as scheduled in Jiazhou Business Circle, Yubei, Chongqing. This is a large-scale city image promotion and non-profit activity. Intangible cultural heritage experience and other activities to promote the characteristics of Chongqing landscape, cultural tourism and scientific and technological achievements are an important part of it.
A t 1 1:3 0 i n t h e m o r n i n g, t h e intangible cultural heritage performance "Dragon Dance of the Jiang Family" was staged. The performers dressed in traditional Chinese dragon dance costumes, each carrying a small dragon prop about one meter in length. With the sound of the music, the dragon props turned over and assembled to form a big dragon… The splendid performance won applause from the audience. As an intangible cultural heritage of Banan District, Dragon Dance of the Jiang Family has been passed down for more than 2,000 years, including more than 20 kinds of dragon dance, such as fire dragon, land dragon, female dragon, boy dragon, single dragon, black dragon, and so on. Many kinds of dragon dance are rare in Chongqing and even the whole country.
Looking closely, there are also four foreign faces in the performance team, all of whom are from the International College of Chongqing Jiaotong University.
Bole, from Rwanda, came to Chongqing to study Chinese in September this year. "At that time, Banan District came to the school to recruit foreigners to study and experience the intangible heritage. I watched Jackie Chan's movies on TV and liked the dragon dance scenes very much, so I signed up."
Coke, from Benin, took up the conversation and said, "Last Chinese New Year, at our national cultural center, I saw the Chinese and Beninese performing the dragon dance together, and I really enjoyed the lively performance."
For Thai girl Ma Mengjie, learning to dance dragon is not because of novelty. "There are also dragon dances in Thailand, but dragon dances often appear with lion dances. When I see Chinese dragon dances, I feel familiar."
Though the several foreign faces seemed to be dancing on stage with ease, their off-stage training is not easy. It took quite a lot of effort for Bole just to remember all kinds of rules: for example, the right hand to hold the dragon's head, the left hand to hold the dragon's tail, and the dragon's tail and the dragon's head can not be down. Not to mention training, "For example, when performing dragon flips, there are a lot of turns, it is very easy to dizzy around. At the beginning of learning, my shoulders are very painful."
"We took the dragon props back to school and practiced in our dormitory." Liu Kaili, also from Thailand, talked about her experience learning to dance dragons.
It was hard work, but everyone enjoyed it.
