If the day is done，

If birds sing no more，

If the wind has flagged tired，

Then draw the veil of darkness thick upon me，

Even as thou hast wrapt the earth

with the coverlet of sleep

And tenderly closed the petals of the drooping lotus at dusk.

From the traveler，

Whose sack of provisions is empty before the voyage is ended，

Whose garment is torn and dustladen，

Whose strength is exhausted，

Remove shame and poverty，

And renew his life like a flower

1861年5月7日，拉賓德拉納特·泰戈?duì)柍錾谟《纫粋€(gè)富有的貴族家庭，13歲即能創(chuàng)作長詩和頌歌體詩集。1913年，他以《吉檀迦利》成為第一位獲得諾貝爾文學(xué)獎(jiǎng)的亞洲人。本詩是泰戈?duì)柦?jīng)典的英語詩之一，詩中并沒有太多華麗的辭藻，用敘事的手法，通過平凡的語調(diào)描繪出一幕靜謐、安逸的場景，平凡卻并不枯燥。
