Joan: The world of opera is large and encompasses numerous languages sung by many nations. Founded in 1984, China’s Opera magazine, what we’re reading now, is part of a great international tradition. Many major countries establish such magazines to provide interested opera lovers not only news but in-depth interviews and articles in their own language.
Valery: I know the oldest magazine of this type in America is Opera News, which started in 1935 as a newsletter of the Metropolitan Opera to keep their audiences informed. It eventually evolved into the glossy magazine we know now, run by the Metropolitan Opera Guild.
Joan: In the United Kingdom, Opera magazine was launched in 1950, founded by the Seventh Earl of Harewood. Years later, a second publication appeared in England entitled Opera Now. But today I want to direct our attention to Spain, where I just attended the ópera Actual Awards.
Valery: I read online that ópera Actual of Spain is celebrating its 30th anniversary. This is the only magazine in the Spanish language on the lyrical genre and has a large worldwide reach, with Spanishspeaking opera fans all over the world (especially Latin America) relying on it for news and information.
Joan: The 2021 ópera Actual awardees were Xabier Anduaga as Most Promising Young Artist, IntermezzoCoros for its success in outreach and dissemination efforts, and Latvian mezzo-soprano Elina Garanca celebrating her successful international career. A very special 30th Anniversary Award was added this year, given to the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid.
Valery: I see beautiful photos of the event, but I guess the ceremony was reduced because of COVID. Also, because of travel restrictions, some had to appear on video rather than in person, including Plácido Domingo who is a member of the Honorary Committee of ópera Actual, and Xabier Anduaga who was in Florence rehearsing his first Verdian role, in Falstaff.
Joan: Indeed, the ceremony took place at the Hall of Mirrors of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, but with seats separated to conform with social distancing and limited to 70 guests. As you must have guessed, everyone was masked, except during solo performance or photo-taking.
Valery: I remember you describing London’s International Opera Awards (normally held in person as a big gala event), which was presented entirely online last time. We do hope these awards will soon return “l(fā)ive” with audiences. I’m sure opera fans around the world will want to be included!
