Surprise for Messe Frankfurt
A broad global presence and digital expertise benefited Messe Frankfurt in fiscal year 2020: The company was able to hold 153 events worldwide (around a third) and generated group sales of around 250 million euros, after its all-time sales record of 738 million euros in fiscal year 2019. However, the company continues to run a loss into three-digit millions.
Thanks to its financial strength in recent years, the company has been able to secure additional funds on the capital markets, thus allowing it to safeguard liquidity, explained president and chief executive officer Wolfgang Marzin.
The company had a medium-term bridging strategy that could be adapted to each individual situation, he continued. The trade fair company is keen to avoid redundancies. A new works agreement has been, relatively discreetly, signed with the employee representatives, based on a socially responsible reduction of personnel costs with a view to safeguarding jobs: Employees are foregoing variable remuneration components until 2022, no vacancies will be advertised externally. In addition, the short-time working scheme made available by the government will be taken up.
