Sometimes night revives a singular plant whose gleam breaks up rooms and their furniture into solid masses of shadow.
Its leaf of gold clings impassively to the hollow of a little alabaster column by means of a very black stem.
Seedy moths attack it in preference to the too -high moon, which is vaporizing the woods. But, instantly singed or worn out by the struggle, they lie trembling, on the verge of a madness that is close to stupor.
Meanwhile the candle encourages the reader with the flickering light it throws on his book at each sudden release of an unusual smoke—and then bends over its plate to drown itself in its food.
When the rain, in delicate aglets, rebounds on the wet fields, an amphibious dwarf, an awkward Ophelia, hardly as fat as your fist, leaps up at times under the poet's feet and hurls herself into the nearest pond.
Let her flee, with her nervousness. Her legs are pretty. Her whole body is gloved in waterproof skin.Scarcely meat, her long muscles have an elegance neither fish nor fowl.
But to escape from fingers the power of fluid in her is allied with the efforts of the living man.
She pants because of her goitre.
And her heart beating heavily, her wrinkled eyelids, her wild mouth move me to let her go.
Halfway between crib and cage the French language puts crate,a simple slatted box for transporting those fruits that fall ill at the least lack of air.
Built in such a way that it can be broken down effortlessly after use, it is never used twice. It is really more perishable than the deliquescing foodstuffs that it carries.
On the corners of streets that lead to the markets, it gleams like white wood without wood's vanity.Still very new, and slightly surprised to find itself in this awkward position, having been thrown into the gutter without hope of retrieval, it remains a most likable object on whose fate we will not dwell for long.
Kings do not touch doors.
They know nothing of this pleasure: pushing before one gently or brusquely one of those large familiar panels, then turning back to replace it—holding a door in one's arms.
…The pleasure of grabbing the midriff of one of these tall obstacles to a room by its porcelain node; that short clinch during which movement stops, the eye widens, and the whole body adjusts to its new surroundings.
With a friendly hand one still holds on to it, before closing it decisively and shutting oneself in—which the click of the tight but well-oiled spring pleasantly confirms.
In the fog which surrounds the trees, the leaves are stripped—leaves defaced already by slow oxidation, deadened by the sap's out-seeping for flowers'and fruits'gain, since the harsh heats of August made of them a less.
In the bark, vertical furrows crease and slit where dampness drains to the earth's base, indifferent to the living citizens of the trunk.
Flowers scattered, fruit conferred.Since youth, this relinquishing of breathing attributes and body parts has become for the trees a standard practice.
