Abstract:Most social and economic manuscripts and popular literature among the documents of Dunhuang and Turfan were written by people of lower classes, and therefore contain popular forms of writing that were often based on mispronunciations of other characters. The casual, highly idiosyncratic handwriting used to write these texts further adds to the difficulty of identifying and sorting the characters used in these texts. This paper select four phrases to interpret:“zhi zhe zhe zhua xing lu jue”只者這爪行路絕; “yizhi feng yanyao, jindi qu tiantang”一直逢閻夭,盡地取天堂; “tu re mian han” 吐熱免寒; and “ku tong”?同. By examining the original manuscripts, comparing the character patterns they share, and analyzing the meanings of the words, the author provides a corrected interpretation of the phrases and reflects briefly on the meaning of popular writing in ancient Dunhuang society.
Keywords:Dunhuang manuscripts; difficult words; popular form of characters
