When it comes to the art of gift gifting, people sayits the thought that counts, but a little more thought thanusual can go a long way.
“Usually the best gift is when someone knowswhat you like and gives you something that they thinkyou will like because theyve noticed things about you,”said, Suzanne Degges-White, a licensed counselor andprofessor of Northern Illinois University.
Gifts tell us how we think people see us, and howwe think people perceive our relationship. And with aromantic partner especially in the early stages, we wantthe gift to be symbolic of how much someone idolizesus. When people have failed to do that and give ussomething totally mismatched, we feel that we haventbeen seen and feel like were not valued in the way thatwe want to be valued.
Its important to have honest conversations withthose with whom you have a long-term relationship toestablish what types of gifts you do and dont like. Sothe pattern doesnt repeat itself the next holiday season.“If the person is not a romantic partner or close friendor family member, keeping quiet and remembering thegift givers good intentions may be the best way to go,”Degges-White said.
Eckel, a content creator who gives advice to herfollowers on relationships, parenting and mental health, posted a video on TikTok on her advice with gifts.“Were humans, we have emotions, and certain scenariosare going to cause very normal emotions,” Eckel said.“Communicating your needs and wants with lovedones is important to keep strong relationships. In turn, listening and taking notes on any hints your loved onesmay provide for possible gifts throughout the year canhelp you to feel more prepared when the season comesback around.”
