Pre-reading
1. Do you often ride to school?
2. How many ways can you think of to use wheels?
3. What’s your favourite type of transportation?
Hello, I’m Jeremy. I’m from the U.S. This is my report on transportation. This world is always moving. Everything seems to have wheels, engines or wings.
Everything seems to be getting faster, too. Long ago, horses pulled carts, but now we have engines on everything, even on bicycles and skateboards!
Where did it begin?
Well, in the 1700s, many scientists worked on steam engines. In the 1760s, a scientist in England found a way to put steam engines and wheels together. Soon people had a new type of transportation: the steam train. That was the beginning of trains.
In 1804, the first train engine was born in England. It travelled only about fifteen kilometres in two hours. In 1825, the first passenger railway opened. The Rocket was the most famous early engine. During the 1830s, countries all over the world started to build railways. Fifty years later, many countries had railways. People built many train stations to help passengers get on and off the trains easily.
Steam was also able to power boats and cars. Boats have been around for thousands of years. Now with engines, they can go faster. The first car appeared about two hundred years ago, and now the roads are full of cars. All of these cars make the U.S. a nation on wheels. Transportation is not just on the ground or water. Over 100 years ago, people began to make flying machines. Today we travel a lot by airplane.
Now people can even travel to space in spaceships. Can you imagine future transportation? My favourite type of transportation is the bicycle. I like to go everywhere by bike in my city. It’s good for my health and for the environment.
While-reading
1. How many types of transportation are mentioned in the passage? You can make a chart to help you answer.
2. What makes the U.S. a nation on wheels? Do you think our country is a nation on wheels? Why?
3. How do you and your classmates often go to school every day? Do a survey in your class. Then discuss which way is healthier.

Great changes in my hometown
Nanjing, a city with over 2,500 years of history, has been the capital of six dynasties. Over the past years, Nanjing has witnessed significant changes.
As is known to all, Nanjing has many places of interest like the Mingxiaoling(Mausoleum of the Hongwu Emperor)and the Confucius Temple. Now, Nanjing has more new and modern scenic spots like the yellow ducks on the Xuanwu Lake Park.
Nanjing used to have pollution problems. Now, the city has planted more trees and constructed many new parks. The government encourages people to take public transportation or ride bicycles,as a recycling way of protecting the environment. The air is fresher, and the rivers are cleaner.
Travelling the whole area of Nanjing used to be a difficult issue, as there was not a complete traffic system. Now, the city has a big subway system that covers most parts of the city. There are more buses and taxis, and new roads and bridges connecting different areas. People can even rent bicycles to rush to the offices or enjoy an entertaining moment.
Nanjing has become popular on the Internet. Places like the 1912 District and the Nanjing Eye pedestrian bridge are famous on social media. Young people take photos and share them online. Local food is also popular on food blogs.
Welcome to Nanjing, it will never let you down.
